VZ58 Lightning Bolt

I post a pic and short review of a QUALITY, PROPERLY BUILT, product sold by a friend, within four posts y'all are openly discussing making your own.

BDG, I am sorry but I fail to see how making our own stuff is a bad thing. I would encourage anyone who has the skills, the tools and the desire, to be self sufficient.

Now, if your concern is a about people's safety, that I can get behind, but seeing how you hope that the handle breaks off and flies away during usage, I doubt it.

They apparently are in the process of pattenting the tabbed carrier. The original patents on the carriers have now run out so I don't know how this will effect the current application. There is a good case for this though as it no changes the operation of the rifle and fixes an obvious flaw.

The real issue to watch out for is if they do get approved and someone has produced a bunch of coppies of an idea that is currently protected by intelectual properties law the owner of the patent can come after you in a big way and you lose money and time in either court costs or both court costs and damages. Its important to remember that in the US the VZ is just starting to gain entry into the market and the market demand is already exceding supply. D-Technic is just laying the groundwork for the future in their eyes and from what I'm told they are already collecting royaltees from Czechpoint and others in the US.

I am not sure they're telling you the truth. Have you actually seen any patent documentation?

You can't just take an existing product, make the smallest of modifications to it and patent it as something else. Patent law doesn't work that way.

You can not patent a small metal addition to an already existing patent any more then you could patent the same bolt carrier into which you've made a scratch of a certain design, as a new device.

From Can anything under the sun be patented?

I really don't hope the handle breaks off, but that can happen if it's not properly done. Making your own isn't what iritates me, it's the implication that some guys want to comercially rip it off that burns me.

Like you said, if they have the skill to properly do it themselves for personal use, good for them. Guys who THINK they can do things properly are a dime a dozen though.

Hey Supra,

The patent on the carrier itself is up or the patent for the tabbed carrier is up? I'm a little confused. Also, from my studies, patents can be enforceable within the country of the product or internationally. If it is a domestic patent, it may not affect you. Of course this matter requires more research.

The problem with patents, specifically American patents is that the patent office isn't doing proper scrutiny.
Microsoft patented a bunch of stuff that they knew was unpatentable, like "look-and-feel" and file formats, and it was only with the deep pockets of several companies that those patents were nullified.

Basically, the patent offices around the world have adopted the same approach to their work as our government has. They are just letting the courts sort-out the mess.

This whole modern business of "intellectual property" drives me nutz!

Patent on the carrier itself.

I plan to but, last I heard, they aren't available yet. Do you know anybody who can make the AK sights fit?
Tim I was talking to Big Dot Dude /Dave he mentioned the real issue is that the diameter of the sight screw on the CZ is about 30 thou larger than the AK sight screw machine it down and your good to go.
