Ive had my VZ58 for a bit now, it came with a side plate to run a side mounted scope. I was on east waves site and figure a 4x scope will work nicely on this gun. Question. Should I get the AK or SVD scope? The mounts look different, the AK scope appears taller and is offset more forward versus the SVD scope. Any help would be apprieated.

I like a low mounted scope, funny face I guess, so i worry the AK scope will sit too high, and worry the SVD scope will interfere and not mount properly.

Holy crap, them Eastwave guys are really pricing their products high nowadays...
I remember a couple of years ago (5 or 6) when they were still operating solely out of eBay and they'd ship the scopes wrapped in a cheap brown paper packaging from Ukraine. I bought a 4x AK scope and an 8x SVD scope off them for something like $90 to $110 each ($90 for the 4x, $110 for the 8x model). Right now, the 4x is $225 USD. Wow... (same specs, same scopes, same company).
Funny thing is, I wanted to buy a Medved rifle and brought these scopes to a local gunstore owned by some Russians that had Medveds for sale (to see if the scopes would fit on the gun). When the salesman saw the POSP name, he immediately made a comment that I've been "had" with a cheap Ukrainian imitation scope, as those are not of the same quality as the original Russian ones. According to him, the POSPs were ok for light use, but not exactly milspec. In essence, they were sub-standard (and no, he was not trying to sell me the Russian ones... he didn't even carry any).
Bottom line, I'm really shocked at the prices these things go for nowadays! I should've bought a bunch and sold them today, lol!... 250% easy profit!

I purchased a 4x POSP scope from Eastwave a few months ago and the price quoted on their website was in Cdn dollars plus a reasonable amount for shipping and no tax. It came in the mail direct from Belarus without a customs hassle, right to my mailbox. I ordered the mount as well and will mount it on my 858 with a metal plate as described on one of the Stickey's.
It is my understanding that Russia never made the POSP's as they were all made in Belarus.
What mount and style scope are you using??
If you have a CSA rail, the SVD mount will sit too far back, if you get the AK mount, the CSA rail will be the correct distance but will sit higher.
Please do remember the Vz58 ejects upwards which will hit the scope, you will need a shell deflector for the POSP.
I use a SVD mount which sits nice and low, but I am running a custom rail mount that allows the correct eye relief.

I said it was a 4x but actually it is a 6x24 POSP scope. I have the AK mount for it and as twyeh mentioned I will have to put some kind of shell deflecter on it.

You are indeed correct... the POSP brand is only made in Belarus (I wrote Ukraine in my previous post... my bad!). When mine were purchased on eBay years ago, they came to me in the exact same way... Belarus Post, brown paper packaging with wax seals/stains, no tax, reasonable shipping charges, etc. Except that the scopes cost less than half of what they go for nowadays, it seems. Makes you wonder how much they really cost the middle man when he buys it from Yuri's military surplus container at some Belorussian bazaar... $15-20 USD, on a good day?
The thing is, POSP is NOT the only ones making these. According to the guy I spoke to (he worked at a Russian military firearms manufacturing plant for many years), the original SVD scope and its' siblings are made (or at least were made) by a Russian manufacturer in the Russian Federation, not in Belarus.... and the originals DO NOT bear the inscription POSP on them, like both of mine do (which is how he could tell right away I had a lesser quality product). The POSP is, according to him, a sub-standard imitation brand of the real and original product. To put it into perspective, it's kind of like when Chinese manufacturers copy the Victorinox or Wenger Swiss Army Knives and call them the "Swiss Army Style Knife". Similar looks, tools and colors, but definitely not the same quality. One can take a lifetime of use and abuse, whereas the other will break on your first trek into the woods.
That said, I've never seen the original Russian SVD scopes for sale in Canada, so POSP is as good as it gets, I guess.
Changed my mine, going with the PK-A red dot, SVD mount. This way the optic will sit nice and low and I won't have to worry about eye relief. Plus my CZ is only a 3moa gun on the best of days so a red dot will work for me. Ordered today through east wave. I will report when it shows up.
So much misinformation...POSP scopes are not sub-standard scopes. There are two lines of scopes produced by more than one factory in post soviet countries. Belarusian Zenit-Belomo is one the manufacturers. Two lines are: military - PSO, civilian - POSP. Both lines are made to the same standards. You could find both lines on their website: ht tp://www.zenit-belomo.by/index.php/en/production/sights/
By the way, Zenit-Belomo has joined production with Zeiss. There is no such thing as $15 dollar POSP...Each scope comes with factory quality assurance and warranty certificate. I don't know how eastwave provides warranty, we cover all scopes we sell. Also we have decided not to bring scopes anymore and focus on firearms.

Thanks TP2 for clearing this up. I actually thought I had the AK type mount and it turns out I have the SVD instead. The smartest thing I did was to order a mount to match the scope and the scope at the same time. Learn something new every day.

The VZ58 folder butt has a sling loop sticking out just behind of the scope mount.
It seems to get in the way of mounting my AK-style quick release scope rail.
Does it need to be removed to mount the rail? Am I trying to put it on the wrong way?

I had a folder too and i removed it because i couldn't slide the scope on my rail and i didn't wanted to cut the loop on the folder. Anyway, i like more the fixed stock,particulary with a scope.
