VZ58 Reclassification?

This whole issue stems from the fact that the current suite of gun control legislation in Canada was not well thought out. it was written to require constant updating of lists of firearms and continual decisions to prohibit by type new models that are produced. Since 1996 there has been no political will to do so by either the Liberals or the Conservatives when they are in power. The result of this has been a widening gulf between the intention of the original legislative crafters and the reality on the ground today. All this is doing is pointing out just how flawed the original legislation was and is.

I think there are lots of people both in law enforcement and in government that would like to see firearms like the tavor and the cz858 "off the streets" but there is really no effective means to do so without a substantial political will to piss off very many people.

the fact that these firearms continue to be sold is a testimony to the power of the gun owning community and to sport shooters in particular.. why do we still have these guns? because the politicians are fearful of US and what WE may do with respect to applying or withholding our electoral will if they did choose to do something about these firearms.

so is the 858 affected or not no firm answer yet on anything and I still have not got one of these guns

No. There are exactly two firearms designs facing possible reclassification right now: 1) Swiss Arms. 2) Kriss Vector. It is unknown as to whether they are claiming that these are converted autos, are easily converted to full auto or are variants of firearms prohibited by name.

wow total BS those are high dollar guns too of course it would most likely be the easily converted one there is no definition on how easy it needs to be could be as simple as some duct tape or has complicated as a milling machine.

meanwhile I can one trip to the hardware store and come back with the parts needed to build a 9mm SMG that uses nothing more then hand tools to build lol

Its funny in the US when they wana ban something people start buying them up the crazy but here in Canada we start selling them like crazy ?? i cant help but notice all the SAN , Kriss , 858 rifles on the EE in the last week .. A lot of roll over and give up mentality from Canadian gun owners ..

The quick answer for that is property rights. Here the government can just take it, a little harder in the USA.

Im holding on to my CZ/VZ family...I think the only rifle I really think is MAYBE in contradiction to the classification and laws is my CZH2003. If this happens to be true I will keep the chrome lined barrel for sure and swap it out with one off my 858 or whatever model they will deem to be OK. Since these barrels were made in small batches they will be the hens teeth of the future unless someone starts a new line including a chrome lined.

I just sold my 58 but it was done just before the RCMP (no longer the Dudley Doright good guys of earlier years) started their attempt to re-clasify the SAN and KRIS. It seems to me that what the RCMP will face by their heavy-handedness is nothing short of a clean sweep of their upper echelon. This will cause the wings of the famous police organization to be clipped. Either that or go the way of our beloved Airborne Regiment.
People may just be selling these rifles as a co-incedence.

And what does that have to do with this topic?
Well let me take you by the hand.... the topic is there are rumors the RCMP are looking at reclass to prohib because you can make older model CZ 858full-auto. I was simply stating that making a rifle full auto is not always something to be concerned about but seems to always be a concern with the RCMP and that an operator with a semi-auto can be more dangerous than one using a full-auto rifle. Do you need any more clarification on my previous statement?

^^^^ That's what I'm thinking too, once they start and if it works you will see the RCMP go after anything that looks the part.

I'd applaud if they gave the RCMP the Airborne treatment. If they were being judged to the same standards as the Chretien Liberals applied to the Airborne they've have been gone long ago...

Unsubstantiated paranoia. There was a secret RCMP memo disclosed that showed that they wanted to reclassify it and suggesting that the government do so - evidently they look at it and could not do it. In order for the RCMP to reclassify it, they would have to prove one of three things:

1) They are converted automatics - they are not - they are built semi-auto.
2) They are variants of a firearm prohibited by name - they are not despite the cosmetic similarities to the AK.
3) They are easily converted to full auto - they are not.

You sound very certain about your assertions. What do you know that we don't? The post I quoted above this seemed to indicate that they were at some stage easy to convert?

Ahem....

Wolverine thanks you for your patience. The same questions that have been posted here are being asked by Wolverine of the R.C.M.P., Customs and the Minister of Public Safety.
Wolverine’s questions have been met with silence from the R.C.M.P., Customs and the Minister of Public Safety.
Whatever the R.C.M.P., Customs or the Minister of Public Safety is doing, or their position with respect of the status of the CZ858 rifles that have already been imported, distributed and sold in Canada is unknown to Wolverine. That is despite Wolverine’s having made many telephone calls and sending letters asking if there is a reclassification.
This refusal of the R.C.M.P., Customs and the Minister of Public Safety is as frustrating to Wolverine as it is to the present owners of the CZ858. The R.C.M.P. has not involved Wolverine in any process of reclassification of the CZ858, not has the R.C.M.P. or Customs or the Minister of Public Safety provided written reports.
There are now two shipments of CZ858 that Wolverine imported as non-restricted and restricted firearms being held by Customs with no written decision of the Minister with respect to the exact reason why. Wolverine has not being allowed to inspect the seized shipments.
Wolverine has endeavoured to commence a dialogue with the R.C.M.P., Customs and the Minister of Public Safety and has been met with silence.
It would be inappropriate for Wolverine to speculate on what the opinions or actions of the R.C.M.P. is with respect to any steps to review the status of the CZ858.
Wolverine will deal in facts not speculation.
Wolverine cannot comment on any other importers of the CZ858.
The R.C.M.P. has made no inquiry of Wolverine regarding reclassification of the CZ858. The last correspondence was an approval as non-restricted in March 2005 after a sample was sent to the R.C.M.P. prior to importation.

My opinion is that we continue the letter writing campaign for the Swiss Arms (letter writing thread found here) which hopefully will come out favourably for firearms owners.

After that I say we become much more active and the "wait and see" attitude gets dropped. We have to take an active approach and not reactive, we can't hope to win through attrition if we campaign rifle by rifle. As a community we must come up with a cohesive way of demanding sensible firearms law and the drafting of a new Firearms Act.

The CZ and VZ may not be the "one for me" but I'll certainly stand by the side of it and the owners as the bigger picture is to prohibit one rifle at a time. Our only hope is that all feel this way and see what's going on with all firearms.

Hahaha cheap. I recall people saying that when trigger wholesales new rifle comes out the valmets prices are gonna drop but with the CZ and Swiss arms rifles on the chopping block I have seen nothing but price increases. Such a joke.

I see used CZ's with over 2K rounds through it selling for more than a brand new one, all because they have a "foregrip" on it.
I'm hoping the RCMP will get their head out of their arse and get this corrected. That is hoping for a lot these days.

Funny story. Sold my 858 at the range. Guy loved it, offered me cash on the spot. Glanced at his pal to make sure it was legit, but can't seem to remember any of the info on it. Ah well. Come as they go, I guess.
