This whole issue stems from the fact that the current suite of gun control legislation in Canada was not well thought out. it was written to require constant updating of lists of firearms and continual decisions to prohibit by type new models that are produced. Since 1996 there has been no political will to do so by either the Liberals or the Conservatives when they are in power. The result of this has been a widening gulf between the intention of the original legislative crafters and the reality on the ground today. All this is doing is pointing out just how flawed the original legislation was and is.
I think there are lots of people both in law enforcement and in government that would like to see firearms like the tavor and the cz858 "off the streets" but there is really no effective means to do so without a substantial political will to piss off very many people.
the fact that these firearms continue to be sold is a testimony to the power of the gun owning community and to sport shooters in particular.. why do we still have these guns? because the politicians are fearful of US and what WE may do with respect to applying or withholding our electoral will if they did choose to do something about these firearms.
