I've been looking to buy a vz58 in 7.62x 39 for the last month on the EE and in stores. This morning I realized that maybe I could trade my all weather mini 30 for one.
Would this be a fair trade? Would it be better to stick with what I have? I know the mini 30 has shortcomings especially with ammo preferences but still it's made in the USA and I've always liked it. The price points seem the same but I don't know much about the vz58, so I'm looking for input here before while I consider making such a posting.
Thanks nutters.

You might have luck trading but IMO, the vz58 platform is much much much better, in every way. It was made for the 7.62x39 round, and eats it up with great joy :) there is a lot of aftermarket available for it, magazines are cheap and plentiful. You can get 10 round xcr mag conversions for it if you want. it's accurate, light, simple to work on and clean, stone dead reliable and the Csa's come with an awesome warranty. Unless you've just got a thing for the garand type rifles, go with the vz, there's a reason it's so popular with the civilian market and still today is being used by various military forces around the world.

I've never had a ruger but I've had my non restricted vz58 for just over a year and well over 1000rnds through it. All different surplus, cheap hunting and expensive hunting rnds. I shoot it after being rained on, snowed on, -30 before windchill. Never ever jammed or failed to charge. I've used the new 5/30's that came with it, new 5rnd and surplus sticky feeling 5/30 and nothing can stop it. It's got the same sighs as an sks but it'll shoot groups twice as good. I could talk about how great they are for hrs. I can honestly say I and many others thought it was crazy to spend 1000$ on an "sks" but after a few months any many rnds I was fully satisfied in my decision. Plus it looks bad ass, ar guys hate seeing thoes beautiful rifles that can be taken anywhere un restricted.

Based on the posts so far, it doesn't seem like it would be a bad trade if anyone were to go for it. I'm gonna crunch some numbers tomorrow because ideally, I get to own both.

Both it is

What's the difference between the mini 30 and mini 14 ? I've never really understood the difference, also why do they wanna ban one but not the other...stupid

Like most of the firearms act, makes no sense. Senseless people trying to make senseless laws based on emotional nonsense. The shooting that took place at the polytechnique school was with a mini 14 and for that reason it's been vilified. The people that want the 14 gone don't even know what the 30 is cause they know nothing about guns.
