I just bought a new ATV on Friday and while waiting for the paperwork decided to check out the rifle racks in the store.

Ended up checking out a new Remington 700 Light Varmint Stainless Fluted in .22-250. I had looked at this model when it was first released, but had passed on it, as I didn't like the feel of the stock, nor its geometry.

The one I looked at the other day, had the new R3 Recoil pad installed, what a difference! Not sure if it was the recoil pad or if the stock was changed, but this time it felt really comfortable and very pointable. I have been shooting a 700VS with heavy varmint barrel, but with scope and a full mag, it wasn't the lightest beast to be tramping over bogs and barrens with. So, I said what the hell and picked up the LVSF!:dancingbanana:

Now I've got to come up with a scope choice for it. Don't want to go crazy and stick a 2lb scope on this light rifle. Can't go wrong with Leupold, but maybe a Bushnell Elite with Rainguard? Hmmm.... Feel free to chime in! This is going to be a dedicated Coyote rifle.:)

Anybody else using/shooting this model? (I know Bartel is shooting it in .223:D )?

So, what are you guys toting for your walking varmint/coyote rifle?
 
I've got a LVSF in 223 and I topped it with a 4-14 Leupod VX III with a varmit reticle...

It has a Poole Creek Precision custom painted stock:cool:

For this winter it's going to be a Stevens 200 rechambered to 223 Ackley Imp with a 2 1/2-10X40 Elite 4200 on it. No more beating up my SAKO on the snowmobile! :rolleyes:

It drives 40 gr ballistic tips into less than 3/4" at more than 3900 fps.

Methinks it will work. We'll se..........................:D

I also have a Sako Vixen 222 HB and it's one sweet shooting rifle. I picked up a Remington 700 SPS 22-250 and put a Leupold VXI 4X12X40 on it for an econo- coyote rifle a few years ago. It's a bit lighter than my Sako for hiking, plus has a bit more range.
 
Sako Model 75 in .223 with a Leupold Vari-XIII 2.5x-8x. It's from the pre-Beretta era and has a nice walnut stock with some reasonable figure and regularly shoots 5 rounds into .75" or less at 100 yards.:D
 
I have been using a Browning Varmint Stalker in 25wssm mostly... same scope as Gatehouse, a 4.5-14X50VX III Vamint reticle, really good glass for long distance varmints. The .25 bucks the wind very well and the super short action lightens the rifle up to the point that the medium heavy barrel carries like a light profile when walking all day.
I am waiting patiently for a 28 inch heavy varmint barrel in .204 Ruger for my Encore Pro Hunter, I am going to put a Leupold Long Range Target 8.5-25 X 50mm with a Special Purpose reticle.:)
 
I've got a Tikka T3 in 243 Win that I've used as my ground hawg carry rifle now for two years. I matched up a Bushnell 4200 4-16x50 A/O on it with semi target turrets which works great from prone long range shooting up at 16x but can be slow on the target aquistion for closer off hand shooting. I've recently purchased a .220 Swift VS SF Remington which will be sporting a Leupold VXII 6-18x40 A/O Long Range Varmint reticle. I hope this will provide a better feild of veiw and be less demanding for perfect eye alignment for a good sight picture. The Leupold scopes are a great choice for keeping weight down and glass quality high...not to mention repeatability. The adjustable objective I think would be a waste on a coyote gun as you rarely have time to dial in the shot. I personally would go with a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x40 Varmint Hunters reticle. This scope would mount low, be fast for distance shooting and has a standard 1" tube and no A/O to mess with.
 
I just bought a Stevens 200 in .223 for this upcomming coyote season. Nothing I hate more then babying a $1000 gun all winter. The rest of you guys have some very nice rigs though ;)
 
My "goto" walking varrminter is a C.I.L. 900 in .222REM, which is an Anschutz 54 acttioned rifle with a Sile stock.
Scope has changed over the years, but will likely bbe an IOR tactical this year.
I use either Speer TNT's or Seirra varminters in it.
Super accurate rifle.......

I have a Browning A-Bolt (thanks to Why Not? :) ) in 22/250 topped with a 2x7 Leupold. It's the most consistantly accurate rifle I have ever owned.

It's perfect for walkin' and huntin', plus it shoots 70 Speers into an inch for deer hunting.:eek:

Your deer looks like an older one, big mass, but not a lot of tines.

Acraglass bedded Winchester Model 70 Light Weight in .223 with a Leupold VX-2 3-9x40mm scope in Leupold rings over Leupold 2 piece bases. Shoots my pet loaded Sierra 50 gr TNT hollow points into 1/2" at 100M at 3050 FPS when I do my part.
 
Tikka T3 Lite in .223 Rem if I'm going to be doing a lot of walking.

Otherwise, a Rem 700 VLS in .204 Ruger.

(Also, a T3 Camo Stainless in .22-250 on the way, and a wildcat (probably .22-250AI or .224 Vais) in the works). :cool:
