Walking Varmint/Coyote Rifles: What are you shooting?

Savage 12FVSS in 22-250 with NcStar 6-24x50. I'm going to mount my Swarovski 3 x 9. The Habicht is a bit beat up, it came off my scabbard rifle, attesting to the fact that I use it. But then again, I cant' blame catnthehat for not wanting to beat up his more expensive rig either, to each his/her own. You'll see this pic in another thread, I want to clean up the scope but don't want to hijack this thread. Correction: I meant scott_r, not catnthehat.

People get names and stuff mixed up all the time, and yup, so did I until I got to the end of your post, girdun!
Good thing you use a high quality scope, 'cause a lesser one may not have survived travelling in a horse scabbard!

Since we've just about covered the "walking varmint rifle" angle, how about glass? What are you guys using? Upper/Lower limit of magnification? Upper limit on weight, eye relief? i.e., 3-9X max, 3.5-10X, etc...

Ideally I think at least a 10X fixed, or a variable like 2-10 or 5-15 would be about right... a 'yote is a lot smaller than a deer.

I have a Leupold VariX-III 2.5-8 on my Sako. I've been considering replacing it with a more poweful scope either a VX2 4-12 or a Bushnell 4200 4-16.

We tend to hunt at first light and right up to the end of legal light, so we use low powered variables, 2.5-10X or 3-9X on our rifles.

Power is cranked right ddoowwn in the morning, otherwise you can't pick out a coyote on the bait or sneaking in
( if that is the case, sometimes they charge in!)
Power is turned up in thhe afternoon.
At one time I hunted with a 6-24X, but even down to 6X it was tough sometimes.
On my long range rigs however, I use some fairly high powered scopes!:D
Theswe are used in the middle of the dday however, where the amount of light is not a problem.

Remington 25-06 CDL with a Leupold VXII 6-18x40AO LRR.

My only "babying" is not to take a DT10 into the Duck Blind...
besides, it's made for clay targets, not waterfowl.

Everything else gets rode hard, has been wet, but is put away dry !
