Don't know if anyone has posted this yet, but in my recent trips to the local wally mart in NB I noticed that their inventory has been dropping off more and more. Upon discussing with an employee he informed me that they were getting out of selling ammunition all together.

The range officer of the club I'm a part of mentioned he heard the very same from a different location and mentioned it was due to the fact they had no one qualified to sell/check and understand licensing requirements, not to mention increase in insurance, and licensing to be able to sell the product. I guess their margins aren't where they need to be.

Just FYI, more benefits for the small operator but also less ability to obtain.

You actually believe something you heard from a walmart employee?

I had to argue with one for 15 minutes a few months ago when returning some blinds because there was a missing part.

Nothing new about that. The new corporate management, Stateside, is afraid of liability suits. They've been getting out of firearms, Stateside, for several years. Sam Walton must be rolling in his grave.

Langley had nearly bare shelves when I was there a few weeks ago. I bought all ten boxes of Dyna points they had too.

Good side: no more ammo books for the counter guy to sell to his gangster friends

I wonder what the legal requirement is for them to safely secure/destroy/dispose of these books?

Ammo books ?
I go to my local wallmart grab the nearest sales person , They open the cabinet take out what I want . I show them my PAL & pay for it & walk out or continue shopping with it in a bag in my cart

Same here. Nice to see some sense left in Canada.

I'm not surprised. The Saint John Walmart has no selection at all when it comes to ammo. 90 percent of the ammo they have is shotshells, with little selection of rifle cartridges, and it's almost like pulling teeth to get anyone to get ammo from the case for you. Crappy tire has more selection, but their prices are way too high. As it is, I'm better to make the trip to Blue Mountain Sports or to The Gun Dealer, if I don't want to pay 20 bucks for a box of .223 ammo.

I've also heard this from 2 Walmart sporting goods dept managers from the guilford and white rock walmarts. The walmart in white rock is one of thier new super stores and I was told by this sporting goods manager..... who ironically used to work for me when i was in sports fishing retail management, that ammo and hunting supplies would be phased out and that canadian master inventories where not being restocked in 2009 due to corporate restructuring and company policies on the U.S. side.
Once master inventories are sold out....... that's it.
I was also told that the inventory would be funnelled to the newer super stores for easier and faster liquidation.
I wouldn't expect too many sales though...... even walmart can see that the availlabilty of ammo is not meeting the huge demand ..... i doubt we will see any liquidation sales on the popular stuff..... but i pop in every week just in case.
During hunting season I stopped in the walmart in white rock and my mind was blown..... they had over a hundred boxes of federal .308 blue box priced at 18.99, regular 21.95. I bought 15 boxes. The amount of ammo on the shelf for that one caliber was what caused me to seek out the manager and ask if they planned to always be that well stocked.
turned out, he was an ex employee of mine...... and this story can now start at the top of this post hehehehe because it was in the converstaion we had that day that I was told about what i mention above.

the rumour mill will never go away...... but this one is gaining credibility IMHO

That will be good news for the local gun shops. Walmart has been selling ammunition cheaper than they can buy it in some cases.
Not good news for those on low incomes though.

:runaway::runaway::runaway::runaway:
OMG Now there will be a stampede to walmart & they will be cleaned out of ammo in less than a week . Then the managers will say wow we can make money selling this stuff & they will decide to keep selling ammo
LOL

good point..... we can only hope thier greed for $$$ will overcome them

Does this also apply to the Family pack shot shell 100's? These should be placed near the checkout at eye level for the BIG kids so momma would have to buy a box to keep the big kid from whining. :shotgun:

It's all about space and return per square foot. Walmart have discovered that they are not getting the expected return per square foot from their Superstores. All new Superstore developments not already approved will be reduced in size by about 10%. Also the expansion of the food sales areas to try to make Walmart the "one stop shop" has further encroached on available space. Suppliers are having to re-package their products in smaller bulk cartons in many cases to reduce inventories and increase turns.

All of the above means that space is at a premium and some areas are being reduced or eliminated to make way for areas that are more profitable or fit better with the business plan. It's not anti gun, just Walmart doing business their usual way.

Welcome to the year 2009.

A lot of Wllymarts have been phasing out hteir ammo/hunting sections over the last 2-3 years....

You just noticed now???? You dont buy enough ammo then.....
