Walther RS3

Totally fits the Euro psyche. Gotta transport it in a case that fits my Škoda hatch/ regional flight. Can’t telegraph it’s a firearm in any way.

Over past summer attended a driven hunt as a guest while visiting family in central Europe. Was surprised to see rifles were fully disassembled for transport.

Now that is real ugly…🤣

I actually kind of like it. 🤷🏼‍♂️. I think the side/angled mag with the UIT style forend is sort of cool.

That being said, A desert tech SRS A2 setup is the same weight and more adaptable. The A2 can be fairly light and handy. Although not FUD friendly or approved.

Walther is onto a winning formula. Light weight, bullpup and straight pull action. I’m just not sure they executed it correctly. Unfortunately at those price points, I’m unlikely to find out.

I’m also in the camp of having to wait for the blatant copies. 😄

I never liked bullpups, the "explosion" is too close to your face. If there is an out of battery discharge, your face is gone.
No thanks.

Explosions expand /vent to the area of least resistance. Those are the two ends. The bolt being designed to close off the rear, leaving the barrel to direct the pressure expansion and expel the bullet. If it blows up as in the bolt shears ( way over powered load) and or a barrel obstruction-it’s designed to vent out a magwell, or in some rifles safety vents, etc. All rifles are designed to mitigate risk to the shooter.

In a convention design the worse case scenario is the bolt head shears off and the bolt becomes a projectile that goes into your face. Providing the safeties designed in place were to fail.

In a bullpup worse case if the safeties fail, the bolt, debris and shrapnel would go into your shoulder vs into your face. Gasses and debris escaping out the receiver port are engineered to be directed away from your face. Won’t be pleasant. Also shrapnel/gas would also be directed out a magwell etc just like a Conventional rifle.

I have zero fear of this with bullpups. In fact I consider a decent bullpup to be safer for the shooter. Shooting a Steyr HS-50 for instance. No concerns. Couldn’t say the same with The DA-50 brought into Canada or the serbuRN-50 also in Canada, neither of which were. Bullpups.

It’s a bad day, no matter what you’re shooting, but a lot of the concern I Believe is more psychological with the chamber being closer to your head than an actual safety concern. Same with cycling the bolt. No issues while keeping your sight picture, once you do it a few times. But psychologically, some just don’t like it.

Yeah I like the Desert Tech a lot. It is a pretty big investment all set up though. Maybe one day.
Would be nice to see this Walther come to Canada under 5k even if in a basic configuration.

Well the desert tech aren’t much cheaper if at all, $6k USD for an ugly gun lol
A Desert Tech setup is 8 to 9k (not including optic) so I'm hoping the base Walther (assuming it even comes to Canada) would be at least a few thousand less.

Bought mine a while ago, second hand with very low round count. Haven’t followed up on the prices. But ya, pretty hefty brand new. Didn’t realize they were that much these days. 7k before taxes seems ti bs the going price. 😬

The base Walther at 4k Euros is $6274 Can. The most expensive one is over 11k Canadian. Coukd be a good candidate for buying second hand.

I think the tan/black version with regular length handguard and 22” barrel looks really good. A Harris on the front helps complete a very cool look. I know it’s subjective, but I don’t think it lacks look wise.

Just not my style of gun I guess!

The Desert Tech isn't my style either, although I admit it has a certain cool appeal to it. I don't think it's "beautiful"...none of the tacticool stuff does, IMHO, although much of it can look cool. I liked it well enough to buy one and play with it. I just found the awkward manipulation of a bolt-action bullpup, with the bolt handle so far back, to be a complete deal breaker. Despite the insane accuracy mine produced, I just didn't enjoy shooting it. Gone within about a year.

The Walther, IMHO, looks much cleaner and nicer...although still far from beautiful...but the thing about it that really attracts me is the configuration that puts the bolt handle up where my muscle memory expects it to be. I can warm up to a gun that is function-before-form, but it had indeed better be functional. Hell, if the Desert Tech had been set up with a traditionally-placed bolt knob, I absolutely would still own it today.

Desert tech: Ya, not beautiful or elegant. But I still like the look.

As for bolt placement.. Likely you are on the taller side? If so then it requires more setup rather than straight out of the box. For those medium height to shorter, the bolt placement is excellent and not a problem. At least if shooting strong side. The mag release is the one ergonomic I don’t like. I find that awkward.

Yup the Walther is a lot cleaner looking. The thumbhole was a good idea to get hunters more onboard. I actually prefer it looks wise in The wood rather than the polymer. It’s not tactical enough to pull off the polymer. 😄

Yes 6K is still steep, particularly for the limited Canadian market. Not sure what the price difference would be for a non-suppressor version but it should make a bit of a difference (I'm assuming it is included in the euro version?). I have seen some guns come into Canada priced under international markets so it is not always a straight conversion, but who knows.

looks nice
Was nice to see how the cocking decocking system works… I doubt we will see that coming to Canada. Especially regarding the suppressor, like many rifles now that have the suppressor integrated into the barrel system.
