Seeing as gopher season is not too far away I was just wondering what the general consensus was on these rifles. I'm sick of my semi-auto .22 and I want a bit more gopher slaying power without breaking the piggy bank on ammo. (ie. im not going to use a .223 on rodents). Are there any good and affordable .17 hmrs I should be looking at? (i think i want a bolt-action as well)... who makes the more reliable/accurate rifle? Is there another caliber I should be considering? Thanks guys, i don't know as much as I should about rimfires.

Get a .223 you will never look at a .17 again

"ie. im not going to use a .223 on rodents" - that's the point.
I'm, in the same boat. I wouldn't want to shoot gophers all day with the .223 ($$$$) but a good .17 would extend the range of the .22 and would also be a lot cheaper than the .223.

Ah well then a CZ makes a exellent .17 .Savage is another good choice depends on your budget

um...the .223 i buy for my AR is like 40 cents a round and that's cheapy FMJ...I can just imagine what target .223 would cost. (btw i don't reload as of yet so the cost difference between .223 and .17HMR is pretty big). What .17 guns should i be looking at?....or is there something else im missing?

I would consider a .22 Magnum. Cheaper ammo and for your purpose, it is plenty accurate. If your looking for a bolt, I'd go with a CZ either the American model or the heavy barrel Varmint model.

I have a Savage Model 93R17 FV for a little over 2 years and I really like it - nothing fancy.

Also, I've always liked the Henry Lever action's in HMR - but not sure about mounting a scope on one - just doesn't look right.

Why not use both, I do.
As a matter of choice, I take a couple .22's, a .17 HMR, and a .223.
This year I also have a 17 Rem to take, and perhaps I'll take my Diana 34 in .177.
I like to let my barrels cool, they can get pretty hot after only a few dozen gophers.
I reload, so the cost isn't a really big issue.
And besides you can't put a price on the joy of watching those little buggers doing their acrobatics.KD

P.S. WSS has Marlin .17 HMR somewhere in the mid two hundred range W/O scope or sights.

The Savage 93R17 BVSS shoots great and looks good too!

The more cost effective alternative is the 93R17 G (or GL if you're a lefty).

They shoot like a LASER and will take care of gophers out to 200yds or more!!!
