Want Opinions on .270s

I'm not a fan, even though I currently have two, and have had others in the past. My 270 Win is a Win 70 I traded with my brother for (he got a south paw 7mm RM out of the deal). I was going to rebarrel it, but the thing is so accurate that I can't bring myself to do so (yet). My other current 270 is a Win 70 in 270 Wby. Ballistically it's a 7 Mag, no more, no less. I had a 270 Redding/Titus/Savage one time, I like the caliber ok, but liked the rifle more (Savage 99). Also played with a 270-08 for a while, basically the same as the previous caliber mentioned. And a 270 Gibbs. Personally I would take a 280/280 AI over a 270 anyday, not simply because I could use the better choice of 7mm bullets. FWIW - dan

Prairie Gun Traders has a Savage Edge XP .270 combo for $359. Anybody have any comments on these? or know the difference between the Edge and Edge XP.
I know the scopes arent the greatest, but it should work for practicing until I can afford a good one.

Had several savages hated them all its like owning a beat up old volkswagon that no one can beat in a race, not even a Porsche 911 , they are the most unrefined accurate rifles made. if you are on a budget a 270 savage is the perfect gun. I have never had one shoot bad and neither have any of my shooting buddies. We had one that outshot a sako trg it was just Sickening.

alpine fox, check the EE for sopes put a good Leupold VX3 NOT a vx 2 on it, the glass is hugely different, buy it used, anything goes wrong leupold honors the warrantly, the older often the better as they have better tactile clicks and hold zero better then get good rings and you will have indestructable hundting rifle that will bring you years of happines, put a little piece of black electrical tape over the end of the muzzle for those wet snowy muddy days to keep the crap out( the bullet is not affected when shot through it, as the air pressure infront of the bullet blows it open and the bullet doesn't touch it) and you will be off to the races

.270 Win. is a great caliber, good on anything right up to moose.

.270 WSM is just more of a good thing, with a little more recoil.

As for rifles...

First, I personally wouldn't head out hunting with any scope that comes in some kind of value priced "combo package". You can pretty much bet the farm that they're going to be junk.

If you can stretch a bit, best bang for the bucks out there would be...

Tikka T3, and top it with a Bushnell 3200 Elite 3x9x40 scope.

A tad bit more dough, but you'll have a rifle for life, and that will shoot the lights out with the best of 'em. I've owned a number of Elite 3000/3200 scopes, darn good optics and quality for a very reasonable price.

FWIW.

BTW...

There's probably some really good deals on Burris Fullfield II 3x9x40 scopes to be had, which also are pretty decent. There's a promotion on, I believe, where they're giving these away with Sako A7 purchases. Might scoop up a deal on one from someone who bought the gun, but doesn't need the scope.

Lastly, this is a good website to watch...

Also, this one...

I snagged a used Elite 3200 3x10x40 Compact off of Elwood Epps last year, just like new but about $100 less. Good guys.

if i can find a good reasonably priced scope i would rather not get the combo ones. i will check out EE when I am ready to buy gun and scope.

Have fun with your future .270 in whatever handle you decide on. For nearly all hunting Joe Average does here in Canada, the .270 will get it done with the right loads. As for my opinion on a rifle, you won't go wrong with a Ruger M77 either older tang safety or newer MkII for a middle of the road bolt action rifle. Tough, dependable, accurate. And it's not a Mattel plastic toy either :) And skip the junk scopes. Get a Leupold Vari X II 3-9x40 (or better) and don't look back ;)

bushnell elite 3200 are scopes they hand out in hell...
Hardly ....... 3200s represent a very good value for what you can get one for on the EE. While most of my scopes are Leupolds, I wouldn't hesitate to use a 3200 either. A new shooter on a budget could do a lot worse.

If God made a better al round gun than the >270, He kept it for himself.
As for scopes I would use the leupold even the vx 1. The 3200 is the same scope as the old Scopechief with fancier coatings. Leupolds turn around time on warranties is quicker and no questions asked.I would stay away from a Savage. They are crude but shoot well. The vanguard is an excellent well made rifle for the price.

The 270 in win. or wsm is a great caliber either way you look at it.I have used both and really like the short mag.If you are on a budget the 270 wcf is the way to go.
You can buy it in a decent price range and it will handle anything that we hunt in Canada and at long range. (Ask Jack O'Conner)

I have a few guns lol. All I use on moose, bear, deer, elk etc is my .270 with 130 grain bullets. My others guns stay home. My rifle is a marlin XL7. Light, cheap and it is my most accurate rifle. Also very soft to shoot.
