Want to make my baby last

Hi Folk,

Greetings from Ireland! Not so long ago, I managed to make a childhood dream come true in that I finally get to own my own M14.

It's the Polytech M305 version, synthetic stock. Ordered in from your great nation of Canada :)

I must say I was over the moon bringing it down to the range to shoot it the first time.

Since these beauties aren't exactly readily available on my side of the pond, I want to make sure I take as good care of it as possible and minimize any improper use that would require repairs or new parts since most replacement parts would require applying for import licenses and jumping through a lot hoops and red tape.

I'm sure this information has already been documented somewhere, but I don't seem able to find it.

Could someone give me a good routine for what parts need to be looked after (for example I read a recent thread where it was mentioned not to oil up the gas system, why is that?). Which parts would need to be oiled/lubed up?

I really want to make this rifle last, since it is a bit of a childhood dream to own one, so any suggestions of a good routine, which parts to oil/lube, and maybe some basic do's and don'ts and any specific parts that would be better to order the custom made bits for would be really appreicated.

Sorry if I'm being too generic here, I'm sure books could be written on the subject.

Very thankful for any responses :)

Have a look at the stickies at the top of this forum, there's a pile of info there. Also take a look at "the firing line" m14 forum from the US... oodles of good m14 reading there as well.
Cheers and welcome to the forum!

Welcome toe CGN.....
So you want years of good service from your m14...don't we all!!
read the stickies...there is tons of stuff that will help you with your epic journy called the m14...other than not shooting bullets over 168/170 grains in weight and doing your regular cleanings the m14 should last you years, maybe 10,000 rounds...idk...good luck and have fun...

ps...what are the gun laws like in Ireland????

Don't shoot heavy bullets, the pressure curve can bend the op rod, or if you want to make the gun last longer, get a adjustable gas plug from shuster. You can adjust the gas so that the bolt isn't hammering the reciever, and you can shoot heavy commercial ammo in it safely:wave:

It is a battle rifle. Other than regular cleaning, battle rifles get the living #### kicked out of them for years and continue to keep people alive. Other than not shooting heavier (+165gn) bullets and not letting rust accumulate, use it like a rental car. I hunt with mine. When I fall down and drop it ......I pick it up and check for barrel obstructions. There is nothing wrong with giving it the care you would a $10K custom rifle if it is your baby, but the rifle doesn't need that level of attention to function well and long.
