How do you guys wash your Camo gear ?

Tags on a few of my pieces say "Cold Wash Gentle Cycle and Line Dry"

I've had a small jug if this detergent for years.

Line dry will take days, any reason tumble dry on zero heat setting wouldn't be an option ?

On a simple machine wouldn't Delicate Air dry be safe ?

I wash on delicate and tumble dry on low heat.
I bought a bottle of "hunting detergent" years ago that's supposed to have no brightening chemicals and no scent. I still have some.
 
scent free laundry soap with no UV brighteners
I have no idea the settings that get used to wash and dry my stuff..... I am forbidden to use the laundry machines.
That's the rule my wife made early in our relationship LOL...... she doesn't use my shop tools..... I don't use her laundry machines ....... happy wife, happy life :ROFLMAO:
 
Wash my deer hunting clothes in baking soda at the start of the season then put them in a Rubbermaid with some small cedar boughs. I don’t really go too crazy on it though, I only wash them once a year. It’s more about wind direction anyway, scent control may buy you a couple seconds or it may do nothing at all. Other stuff get washed with whatever wife has on top of washer but only if it’s really muddy.
 
I usually just hang the clothing on a line for 2 days before opening day.
I like the Cedar bough idea though.

I don't typically spend money on scent killer's etc., the detergent I bought was a smoking deal at a liquidation place we stopped at.
 
most deer hunters have no idea about UV brighteners in laundry soaps.
If you are using a laundry soap with UV brighteners, which most laundry detergent has, the deer can see you, even if you have the very best camo on. UV brightening products will make your fabrics glow in the vision of a deer or elk .

sometimes it's not about scent at all
 
I never had a problem with UV brightener, I do pay close attention to the wind and my movement though .

well here is something to think about . i can remember years ago working in a fiberglass making plant after work .i went up to my hunting spot area . and sat down .near a old swamp . that evening a bunch deer came out get some water .they did not seemed alarmed at all . i figured . smelling like fiberglass they would have just left. something i wont forget.
 
No scent, no UV brightener. Hang dry. In a container with pine needles.

Does it help? Who knows. Animals are individuals just like people are. Who knows how neurotic that target animal is. I know it doesn’t hurt, takes very little effort and money compared to everything else involved in hunting so I’ll continue doing it.
 
Does anyone know how long it takes to get rid of the UV brighteners if you've been washing your clothes with normal laundry detergent?

I have never been one to put a lot of stock into scent control (I figure no matter what I do I can't stop them from smelling my breath and farts, which are going to smell like they come from a predator) but I saw a kit on clearance at CT the other day - body wash, pit stick, laundry detergent, dryer sheets - and figured I'd give it a try. But now its got me wondering what can be done about the fact that all my stuff has been washed in normal detergent up to this point...
 
If a guy is concerned, between; washing soda, baking soda, borax, and salt there are plenty of ways to wash cloths without buying "special" laundry soap.
 
Up until this year oil washed my stuff in plain old warm water long cycle, low heat tumble dry.
The following season I just hang outside fir a couple of days

I’ve always used the delicates setting and used scent free detergent then tumbled on low as well with a scent free dryer sheet too and then zip lock them in a baggie until I get out there so they can’t pickup any odours in the mean time, when I get out of the truck is when I change into them
 
I guess I'm the odd man out. I just hang my hunting clothes over a camp fire and smoke them. I never wash them. Animals don't seem to care about campfire smoke scent.
I figure either way the game is going to smell me unless I'm completely down wind and the wind isn't swirling.
 
Here is a thought.....imagine what your gun smells like, all the cleaning agents are pretty stinky, I use hunting detergent but have always had a feeling it's a gimmick.....obviously a non scented detergent couldn't hurt. I also throw some leaves and sticks in the bag I keep them in and don't put them on till I'm about to go into the bush....
 
I used to be pretty particular with how and what I washed my gear with.

Now IDGAF, use regular detergent and kill big bucks and bulls. Play the wind right, watch your movements and you will be successful.

Ultimately, wash your gear so that you don't wreck it and it will last longer. Tumble dry on low heat should be fine.
 
I use to do all the washing tricks and wore hip boots (through a stream) to go to and from my tree stand. Talk about scent free. Came back to the cottage after dark one night and watched the dog let out the door for a whiz and see him back track me 75 yards on a full run instead. And they say deer have a better nose. Sobering….
We wore little containers with skunk juice impregnated felt pads inside back in the day. You could close/open the little vents and it seemed to work to a degree on deer and stray dogs wandering by. Only problem was the patrons and waitresses of various restaurants could still smell us when we stopped by for brunch. Pepe Le Pete skunk perfume. lol
