It's taken me a day to start this. I still don't know if I'll get my thoughts straight.

I got the call that Mike Yaciuk passed away, apparently in his sleep. Mike was one of the good guys. He loved to come out and play. It didn't matter if it was PPC, IPSC, or just plinking. He came out to play and socialize in equal parts, and that pretty much sums up his whole life.

Mike seems to have been able to go through life working hard, but always finding time to play hard. I started out as a friend, and wound up an employee for a while. When Mike found himself with more work than help, he gave me the opportunity to make extra cash when I'd been laid of to only part-time. Years later when he'd sold the business to his son Bob, he once again called to see If i could help out.

It was never dull working for his or his sons company. I lost track of the number of time that people would stop out of the blue and come looking for Mike when they saw the truck. It would seem Mike rarely had just customers. They all seemed to morph into friends. He was in business, but he always seemed to put the personal contact up front. He made sure the customer knew what was really going on, and made sure they were comfortable with the money they spent.

His son Bob would probably be both proud and embarassed to see how close to the mold he is from the old man.

Of Holland Landing. Born June 15, 1935 in the Northern Manitoba community of Zbarez. Mike was very adventurous and active in his entire life until the morning he passed away peacefully in his sleep on Easter Sunday 2006. He was the proud owner of Pomeroy's and White Water Softeners since 1972. Today, his sons are still carrying on the family business. One of his many passions included target shooting which he excelled to the top of his class and received many awards and accolades at the expert level. He was also an active member of the Bradford Curling Club where he often spoke of good friends and good times. Over his 70 years, Mike's many accomplishments have included obtaining his solo pilot's license, parachuting at the young age of 62, hang gliding, soaring, wood carving and inventing. He travelled extensively around the world and most recently returned from tours of Greece, Italy and Africa. Loved by his three children, Robert (Cheryl), Tracey (Harvey) Rudyk and their two children Krystal and Kirsten of North Battleford, SK., and Bradley (Lindsay) of Newmarket ON. Mike will be sadly missed by his many friends and relatives.

Mark just told me.... Wow... He'll be missed.... The jokes about falling asleep at a PPC match will never be the same....

Some say it's a slow sport but apparently for Mike it was too slow he fell asleep during a prone stage.... He took up IPSC a little while later.. I don't believe he ever fell asleep while shooting a match in IPSC....

Don't know that I'll make it to the funeral but I'll drink a cold one too him Friday night....

Friends will be received at the TAYLOR FUNERAL HOME "NEWMARKET CHAPEL" 524 Davis Dr., 905-898-2100 on Thursday, April 20, 2006 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel. Don't sweat it. I'll move around a lot. It will look like we're both there.

I'd forgotten about Mike falling asleep while shooting:D

Mike and I did the Range 4 Course together at Sharon last year. We were both up at the range on a couple of Friday mornings prior to the course practicing.

Mike always liked the quite of Range 3 during weekdays in the morning. He said the perfect day was when the sun was shining and you could smell the pines that lined the range. He took his time. Never rushed and enjoyed every moment he was there.

He will be missed. I will miss him.

Mike was helping me out just month ago with my IPSC BB. Very nice man, always smiley and helpful.
I didn't know him a lot, but I could sense that he was a first class person.

Yes, he's one of those truly great guys !!
I've know Mike for atleast 10 years thru Ipsc.
Very nice to everyone & in a good mood al the time.

He'll be missed big time. Never heard about the falling asleep story.
I'll be at the wake, if anyone there knows it, please tell it.

My next drink will be a toast to Mike.

Cheers

Turns out I can't make it to the funeral today. I called Taylor Funeral Home (thanx for posting the conatct info Canuck223) and the nice lady said Mike left it so anybody can donate to whatever charity they want.

How typically Mike.

So I've donated to CSSA in his memory.

The funeral was very well attended. The procession to the cemetary included so many cars they virtually took up the entire system of pathways to park.

Bob Yaciuk read the eulogy, and not suprisingly 50% of the content was relating stories of Mike and his gun obsession. Included was his infamous 5 gallon pail of water as a bullet trap, Oh Crap what was I thinking!, Hey, why is the water tank leaking?? story.

Not suprisingly, 50% of those attending were shooters. Also represented were a local MPP Frank Klees, and the ridings federal Conservative candidate Lois Brown. The neighbouring ridings CPC candidate could not be there in person, so he donated much of the cheesecake we were gorging on at the reception.

Mike clearly left this world with a long list of friends.

He will be missed.
