I am thinking more of the 500 S&W, 475 Lindebaugh, 460 S&W et al. Duplicating the performance of some 45/70 loads. I feel like these "super pistol" chamberings may take the 300-400 grain bullet at moderate velocities crown from the older cartridges, while potentially doing it in a shorter barrel. Not only that, many are rimmed for a single shot action, which is my current flavour of the week.
I don't see how .44 mag and 45 colt handloaded in a strong action would work any differently for a 30/30 lever for me, besides having cheaper ammo.
We are talking pretty theoretical here; 14-16 inch barrels. Though I suppose .308's do come in those lengths.
