The claimed performance level is a 225 grain bullet at 2800fps. This is roughly the same as the 338 Winchester Magnum. Since the case capacity is slightly less than that of the 338 Win. This is about what one would expect. I shoot 225's at 2800 from my 338 and am happy with that. Interestingly, the case dimensions for the new Weatherby round are very similar to the 284 cartridge designed by Charles Newton; except I don't think his was rebated.

So they're making a new version of the 338 Winchester? It will do everything that the 338 Winchester does with the benefit of pricey Weatherby brass?

Pasadena.

I'm thinking now that Weatherby has committed to the case a bit more (6.5 RPM and now 338 RPM) we might see it and wildcat variants of it become somewhat popular with re-chambering. If I can take a .30-06 I never use and open the chamber up to *308 RPM*, that would be like 300 WSM/300 Win Mag power in a rifle without touching the bolt face, likely without touching feed rails or magazines, and at worst requiring a magnum magazine to accommodate the extra girth of the case.

the weatherby caliber has more knock down power than the 6.5 creed some 6.5 guys think it can ethically kill large game at distance

Bless you sir for saying that. I was getting tired of being picked on for saying it :d

But without the belt! That's huge! Lol

I get 2740 with 225 grain bullets out of my 338-06 (24" barrel) and it too doesn't have a belt. (or costly brass) .

It's not until you step up to 250's that you see any meaningful improvement with the 338WM over the 338-06. I suspect it will be the same with this new Weatherby cartridge.

I seriously doubt it. Pretty much everything larger than 30 is a niche.....be that target, or dangerous game.

Weatherby already has a bunch of niche cartridges with their name on em, so I could see them adding another to the stable. Unless I'm mistaken there aren't a lot of 338 options in a factory rifle, pretty much just 338fed and 338 win mag that I can think of*? You can still get factory 338fed rifles right? Lol

*yes I realize there's the 340 Weatherby, Lapua, etc but they're all bigger than 338win mag

You're definitely not wrong there. There may be no shortage of cartridges over 30, but I'd bet that more than 75% of hunters choose something between .264 and .308 when the head afield, maybe even more than that.

It seems for most guys a “ big gun” is a 7mm rem mag or a 300 win. 338 win and 340 wby etc are not even on their radars they might as well be a 505 Gibbs

Weatherby having boutique cartridges is kind of inconsequential; that is their business model. Seems these new rpms are made specifically for weatherby heads who want a weatherby mountain rifle.
