Weatherby owners.

I have both a vanguard and a tikka, and the tikka is smoother than the vanguard. I am happy with both of them but do prefer the tikka over the weatherby. The trigger on the tikka is also definately crisper than the vanguard as well.

Sako is smoother out-of-the box, for sure. The Vanguard takes some breaking in to smooth out. Trigger-wise, my Vanguard breaks at 3 pounds almost dead-on and feels really nice. Not perfect, but better out-of-the-box than my Ruger/Browning/Remington guns. I've heard it's hit-or-miss though, so you're best off checking in-store.

I am a fan of the Howa/Vanguard. They are priced very well and are generally quite accurate.

The Weatherby Mark 5 may have a smoother bolt then all of them, I've never put a smoothness tester on one, my German made one was slicker the owlsh%t.

Well thats swell Ben, I bought a Weatherby vanguard 30-06 for my dad for Christmas. When it gets here next week I'll check it out. It has the tan with black spiderwebbing rubber coated stock, looks nice (its not wood but it will do). It has an exceptionally nice test target so we'll see what it can do with hand loads when I get it. The current owner put less than 2 boxes of factory through it and says 3/4" 3 shot groups are the norm. Should be a great deer/moose rifle for Pa.

No kicks regarding bolt operation with my Vanguard 300 WM (about 15 years old). Never has missed a pickup from the magazine.

However...

Pretty tough to match either a Tikka T3 or Sako A7 for buttery smooth slickness.

Gringo....I don't know if there is some confusion here re: Weatherby Vanguard vs Mark5...they are totally diff, actions and barrels, etc. The Vanguard is made in J. A. Pan by Howa and the Mark 5 Is made in the USA, but was made in J.a.pan, and before that in Germany by Sauer, and originally made in the USA

Yes I was aware of this. I was just curious about the vanguard as I was about to purchase one off here and have never handled one. I'm sure they are no mark v but you usually get what you pay for right. I just find the Tikka and Sako A7 I own are silky smooth and hope the vanguard will at least in the ball park for nice operating action.

Thanks for the input
Chad

The new m70's are right there with the Sako's in my opinion. I have a 30-06 and it is one of the smoothest bolts I've handled.
The mark V's are nicer than the vanguards bolts but then you're paying for the name. Nothing wrong with the vanguard, especially the tan/web stock. Those are pretty nice.

I have three vanguards myself 243, 270 & 30.06 and I love all of them, All made in Japan, I love the bolt smoothness and also the accuracy, I have it other guns but none of them have come close to being as accurate as my Vans. I have brought down ever game with a single shot, never had to shoot twice as the bullets hit when I want them to which means accurate dead on target..

Within 200 yards or so,even a 2" gun will easily make one shot kills. It really isn't a good test for accuracy.

Have a few Tikkas and hands down the slickest is the old M658 action - silky, buttery smooth. T3's are pretty good, but don't have that polymer sleeve to stabilize the bolt when it's cranked back. My Vanguard's action is okay, not as smooth as the t3's but who notices when it's followup shot time? Complaint I had against the Vanguard was the trigger - horrid. I've heard otherwise, but mine was terrible - couldn't be cleaned up or adjusted anywhere near acceptable. Swapped it out for a Timney and now the thing can shoot - went from 1.25" @ 100 to 0.5" with a Ballistic S'Tip 95 grain handload with a simple trigger swap, so the rifle definitely is accurate. Other beef is the quality of the barrel blueing - pretty well as cheap as my $200 Stevens. I expected it on the Stevens, but not on the W'by. And mine has the tan/black spider-webbed rubbery stock as well - really like the stock. Well fitted, good gription in any weather.

vanguard actions are junk in my opinion

And all Ford/Chev trucks suck...
Common give me a break!

I like my ''sporter'' Weatherby 300WM. Shot very accurately out of the box, and was made even better with a bit of smitthing TLC as mentioned above.

I've owned a T3, and can say that the action on the Weatherby is almost just as ''slick''... almost...

Cessna (Is a big fan of the Weatherby bolt design)

I never mentioned yardage, I mentioned how accurate they are and smooth bolt they have. I have brought down deer near to 450 yards with a single shot. It's all about shot placement and knowing your gun how good it is and also knowing your height adjustments when hitting targets over 200 yards... I was wondering what 2" gun you are talking about, never heard of such small gun, lol..

Tikka's are great, but weatherby's aren't junk guns, they are as good if not better then other good brand guns..
