Weatherby vanguard 2. What do you guys think.

I have an S2 in. 7 08. When I first went to try it out I made up 5 different loads to try. The groups ranged from .75 to 1 inch. Without any real load development it was moa out of the box. Can't really ask for any better from a rifle at that price point or even higher. Only real problem is my son wants to shoot it all the time now.

The Vanguard S2 is anything but an " entry level " rifle in my opinion.
Its well put together, smooth functioning and superbly accurate if not more so than some of the higher end much more expensive show pieces.
I'll pack my S2 in a saddle scabbard on an Elk hunt or in a gun boot on a quad when Moose hunting or slung over my back in a driving rain, something I would never think of doing to my Mannlicher Schoenauers or a couple Schultz & Larsens or a Sauer 375 I parted with.
Its an excellent choice for a serious hunter, perhaps not for one wanting to make a fashion statement ...
who buys quality pieces like those you mention and doesn't use them as they were intended (other than yourself)....

I guess we agree to disagree, It is not uncommon to see hunters in other countries regularly use firearms worth 10's of thousands of dollars for every hunt (think africa and europe). This phenomenon of praise for spending the least amount of money to hunt and regarding it as an achievement is only something that appears to be coveted in North America. Sure there will be a retort about much poorer countries and tribes still using spears and such, but everyone reading this has a computer and internet access so hardly fair to compare.

OP, sorry for the highjack... :) I have posted once in this thread, but I know nothing of Weatheryby rifles. I am, however, a newbie but committed hunter. I shot my first buck with my M44 in 7.62x54r, but I want a dedicated hunting rifle in . 270. Of the three rifles, what would you select....Ruger American, Savage Axis II, or a Vanguard Ii

Vanguard:)

The Vanguard S2 is by far the the BEST ! quality of the 3 and prob the most accurate too but a tad Heavy ! JMO RJ

I just bought an S2 in .243

Only have a box through it so far, but I love what I see so far. Bit of a heavy beast after you put a bipod on it, but I can live with it.
The looks, the construction are very well done. The trigger on the S2 is DYNAMITE!! Love it!!

I always wanted a Weatherby, and the Vanguard provided me a price point I could manage.

Anyone know where to buy aftermarket wood stocks for them?

Boyds.

I'm also looking at the Vangaurd S2. Any opinions on if the Varmint version would be worth the extra coin? Much accuracy difference?

For varmint, I bought a second S2 (as I have a Rem heavy barrel already in 223) for those that accompany me on the gopher shoots. The S2 shoots extremely well, but seems to be very fussy regarding loads. My Rem still takes the lead on the accuracy dept for no other reason as I can change out a 40 gr to a 50 gr without affecting POI. No so with the S2 as much.

Not sure why this rifle is so picky, but it is an overall sturdy rifle. The Varmint grade should allow more shots without a heating issue. I have heard though that the grouping is just as picky as my S2.

One piece bolt, excellent extractor, stiff flat bottom action, decent factory trigger, lots of room in the mag to seat bullets out if you reload, function well. They have a lot going for them but I still prefer tikka's, they just feel more refined to me.

Just had my S2 in .308 out yesterday. Put 30 down range. Nikon Prostaff 4-12 on top.
Felt great, hit where it was supposed to, smooth.
Cant be beat anywhere close to the price range.

Will buy a second in 30.06 this season.

Buy one.

I just got a slightly used .270 from a friend. and it is a GREAT gun! accurate, great trigger, and slight overweight does not bother me at all! Sturdy, and tough in my opinion!
best gun I have shot in this price range! my Remington .308 will be having a much deserved break next year!!
only draw back I have with mine is that with the setup of scope that he put on, my thumb hits scope when reloading. but with some tweaks I see that disappearing. he does have awfully small hands for a man! ;)
love this gun so much, I am debating getting a varmint setup too in near future!!!

OK so I have never owned a Vanguard of any flavor but just purchased a VGX and looked long and hard at a VGS just prior to that. Where do these two models fit in the Vanguard evolution and big scheme of things. I bought the VGX in a 270 (don't worry I don't intend to ever shoot it like that) but thought it would make a very nice 234 Penguin.

one of the best of the world Japan made from a finnish copy. there is only a little cons they re not made with left hand action. a little heavy but great rifles.

Google vanguard history part I, I I, and I I I for the full story.

I just picked up a howa 1500 in 375 ruger. I like the gun, I believe it is almost the same as the vanguard. Won't be able to go shoot it for a few more days though.
