A neighbour recently showed me this revolver.

It is branded "Webley III .38" There appears to be a small superscript on either side of the 'III', but I couldn't decipher what they were.
The serial number is in the 18### range.
The only other obvious marking was a cartouche stating: Webley Patents.
Here's a photo.

The neighbour is in his late 80s and stated that the revolver belonged to a great uncle.
Anyone tell me exactly what this is and how old?

Regards,
John

You should post this in black powder and antiques . I would think the cal is 380 british and this revolver may qualify as antique .I'll dig in the books and see what I can find

Dez,
Thanks. I hope that you are correct.
I have 2 Ewbley and Scott's. A Mk I (antique) and a Mk VI. This gun only says Webley.
I should have photographed one of the rounds, Flat nose in a quite long cartridge with a series of dashes mid length.
I am hoping for antique which will allow him to keep it. On the other hand, if it is restricted then perhaps it will be mine.
Regards,
John

I just checked that model goes to serial # if it is 380 British and made before the 1898 cut of then you could de-register it if it is in 38Smith& Wesson then no go . the 380cartridge is a heeled bullet the bore diameter should be around .375

It's probably 38/200 rather than 380, and 38/200 I think they have listed as "also know as" 38 S&W. And I believe the cut-off for MkIII's is around serial number 1000.

Hey, that's the gun I use in Bioshock!

My friend's grandfather has the same Webley revolver but with a 4" barrel and in staineless steel. It's chambered in .38 S&W.
