Kinda........I think what I was trying to get out was that .243 cal rifle is the mininum you are allowed to use. I think .243 is OK for deer, but I wouldn't use it on moose or bear. .30 cal is the way to go for that.
Most guys I know use 7.62x39,30-30, or moose sized calibers, like 270,.308,30/06 just because they want to take that "dream" 300 yard shot. Realistically, almost all deer around here are shot at 75-150 yards. If I was dogging, I would have no problem carrying a Mini-14 in .223. Infact, I am thinking about buying a nice light gun just like that for the special purpose of dogging.

come on guys the 223 was a shell ment for human size game ar15 m16 and so on how many deer are bigger then a man .i have seen a lot of deer shot with this round and if hit in the heart lung area it is no problem a rib will not stop a 223 .and the very nice think about then is thy hit were you aim .find a premiam bullit and hit them right DUTCH
It was designed to wound people... not kill... Always remember when one guys dies its one less guys to worrie about, when you wound him tho well you need at least 2 people to carrie him, medical personnel to fix him, etc...
