I was out hunting for mule deer the other day . Was hiking a mountain side when something flicked in the corner of my eye. I see this coyote that was behind a rotted log looking at me. He had i guess walked up the slope behind trees out of my vision and stopped to look at me. Well. I lowered my gun as this coyote was about 30 feet from me peering at me over the log. I was in full camo if that makes any difference. The coyote then jumps the log and comes straight for me. Im thinking WTF so i shot him at about 25 feet. I was under the impression that coyotes are afraid of humans and generally high tail it out of there but not this one.
I am wondering if he didnt know what i was. I was standing at the time just glassing the valley below when he caught my eye.
The coyote looked very clean and wasnt mangy and looked in great condition other than the huge hole in his side.
Thought it was weird.

despite what many people believe a yote will attack a human if they are hungry and not having much luck finding other food such as birds, rabbits, deer etc. If the yote is along and no other yotes are around 99% of the time they can not take a deer by itself. This leaves the yote to resort to other game such as varmints. If your the only food it's seen all day or in several days your a nice big tasty meal.

NEVER let your guard down from a yote... EVER!

And thats the reason why there isn't alot like them who are not, cause they get shot. Was he just running at you or snarling or what?

He made no sound whatsoever. Jumped the log and was headed for me. I wasnt about to find out what he was so curious about.

On a side note. There were lots of coyotes howling and yelping lower down in the valley that day probably 1/2 mile away. They were making a real ruckus after i shot this yote. I dunno. It was a full moon. Didnt see one deer all day.

Which way was the wind? In full camo and your outline broken-up, he might have just been curious, as you weren't immediately identifiable as "human." If the wind was at his back, he couldn't catch your human scent, so its possible he wouldn't be as wary as they normally are.

Nope. Wind was at my back. Before this all happened i was thinking to myself how less than ideal the conditions were. I was basically standing on a rock shelf with not much vegetation behind me. There would have been nothing for my outline to blend into.

Could be several things, rabgies being one. Yotes have been known to rumble with moose every once in awhile, not exactly surprising that they would choose to tumble with an unknown/human.

how did he get a hole in his side if he was commeing at you????????

Basically coming at me from the side, as in looking at me with his head cocked while circling. I aimed for his body as he was so close. Took out his whole left side. Thats about the best i can describe it.

was he a young coyote?I have had pups be pretty stupid that way but never an adult.I did get one with my bow at under 4 yards this year but that was because i saw him before he saw me and he was headed right my way.he didn't see me until I put an arrow through his ribs.

City/town coyotes, coydogs, & any animal that has been near/feed-by man can be "extra friendly" as times. But usually coyotes sense humans long before we arrive ...... and are long gone as a result. They also seem to be, as a species, fairly resistant to rabies from what I hear.

Yes. definitely a young coyote. He was probably the size of a young border collie. He had the opportunity to turn 180 degrees and high tail it but chose otherwise and my reaction was pretty much instantaneous. Like i said i wasnt hunting for coyote and was minding my own business.

I've run into two different coyotes that were pretty curious. Both did the "dog walk" ie - walking on an angle and kindof circling. Both of them were young and curious. One sat and cocked his head to one side after. Was probably curious why there was a walking bush in his valley:p
