Welcome CZ(VZ) 858 Tactical

OK, shouldn't both these versions be pretty much the same, except for the barrel? So how is it possible that we have complaints about the first quality of the first batch(Marstar)? I mean, these are not surplus Hungarian or Romanian M-44 carbines... some nice, some junk. Also the price is almost the same, the 858 being $50 more expensive(but that is because of the added barrel and because it is non-Restricted, so Hipwell can very well jack up the price by a few dollars)
capp325, just checking... are you into milsurps/military at all? Because these, even new, will not have the "polished" look of some civilian rifles. They are generally not made to look nice, just cheap and reliable...not Remingtons.

The 58's looked like they've been dragged behind a pickup truck for a couple thousand miles ....

Who cares, as long as thay were dragged behind Czech army truck, thru the muddy steppes of Eastern Europe. :lol: :lol: :lol:
 
Anybody considering mounting a scope on these things ?

I was thinking a Kobra or an OKO.

The OKO with the steel skeleton mount looks pretty sturdy.

Anybody can tell me who's got them here ?
 
Vz-52 - thanks for the pics.

A couple of observations. Yes, the internals look different than on the VZ-58s I've seen (trigger group for example), and the overall finish appears better in terms of the paint, as well as the metal work. Very nice rifle - I'll put it on my shopping list.
 
Got mine today :D Range report to follow.

PS: My front sight is excatrly the same as the one on an SKS. It dosen't have the top part cut out of it. Also, I see what people think is Epoxy. It looked like Epoxy to me too but on closer inspection, I believe it to be a grey color weld.

Well, when thinking about quality guns, Remington is not exactly the first name that comes to my mind (not modern Remington, anyway). But that's another matter.

While I don't consider myself a milsurp expert, I've seen brand new Russian AKs that looked much nicer than those two VZ58's. The guns that I saw were definitely not "new production" (although that doesn't mean that they weren't newly assembled). The wood furniture was pretty worn out, and the guns did not look freshly painted. There was also a "plug" on the bottom of the receiver that was of a significantly lighter shade of gray than the rest of the gun. Seriously, the way those guns looked, they could have easily been picked up from a battlefield in Angola or something. I'm not saying that all VZ58's that were brought into Canada were in poor shape. I'm just talking about the two specimen I had a chance to personally examine.

Now the pictures of the 858's that were posted in this thread look a lot better. Maybe the flash is hiding the imperfections in the finish and making them look more mint?
 
My 858 arrived in the mail on Friday and am impressed with what I've got. It looks like a new rifle to me, even if it's painted. Compared to some of the Norinco products that I have bought over the past couple of years, it definitely looks better than the bulk of them......

Perhaps if a steady market develops for this rifle, it will eventually be available at a lower price (I remember a similar thing happening 10-15 years ago when the semi-auto AKs were being imported by Century), though I am happy just to have added one to my list of toys. :D

here's a quick range report of mine from another thread:

I just picked up my 858 today. went to an indoor range as it was dark when I got it. I couldn't use my czech ammo because they said it was steel cored. Anyways, I bought two boxes of American Eagle 124 gr FMJ stuff to test the thing out on.

The range was only 50m so I will have to do more testing later. First group was decent 2- 3", and a little high.

The next four groups were decent as well, but they were 10 shot groups, and way high (again about 2-3" group size).

The final group was done carefully, as they were my last 5 rounds. this group was about 1-1.5", with one flyer, which can most likley be attributed to me, as I can't shoot for ####. I also aimed low, as I want to sight the thing in at 100 m.

I do have pics on my camera, but I am searching high and low for my ####in USB cord. Also, this ammo was 14.95$/box of 20, and I can't say for sure how good this thing will shoot with my czech m43 (that has a bxn # of 65)

For the price, and with the extras it comes with, this thing easily out performs my sks in every category (my sks was a D model with a folding stock that wobbled so much I couldn't even hit the ground at 10 yards with the ####ing thing).

I also took some pics of it beside my 16" AR and my 18" bbl Mossy 500 Mariner. I will post the pics ASAP.

We just got our stock in today. The rifles appear to be even better than the demo one that Wolverine brought to the gunshow here. Finish is great, the metal work is top notch, and the rifles look new, not exactly what I expected and a welcome surprise.
 
I just picked one up at P&D (just now drove over there and got it), it looks good! They have a few in stock but said they are going fast... if you are in Edmonton then no need to be on a waiting list if you move quick.
 
Just got mine. Old stock , or surplus, looks new to me. Nice and shiney. packed in oil and plastic, the rivets in the mags are very well done, can't even tell they are there at first.
Shooting it tommorrow.
 
Anyone elese have trouble attaching the strap? When I looked at it I was like "WTF? How is this suppose to go on?" I ended up cutting and removing the white stiching. Not sure if I was supposed too, but it attaches like a normal strap now :mrgreen:

I load mine with stripper clips. Works really well.
 
please explain. Stripper clips do not compute.

I will tell you how to attach the strap in exchange for you showing me how to use stripper clips

once the clip itself stops, place your thumb on the top round (as close the the base as possible) and exert downward pressure. Ths rounds will 'strip' off the clip and into your magazine, its that simple.
 
I'm glad to see that you are all well-pleased with your CZ 858 rifles. Just as I am happy with my VZ-58. I guess it just goes to show that the nay-sayers on both sides of the fence were dead-wrong. You're happy, I'm happy.

Hmmm..... So just who are those nay-sayers? Sour grapes perhaps? Seems to me that everyone has won in this particular venture.

My sincere congratulations to both Marstar and Wolverine Supplies for having catered to slighting differing markets. Both rifles are apparently stellar, and both have sold like hot-cakes. Nothing more need be said. Well done Marstar and Wolverine. You bring us what we want, and you get our business.

Both are aces in my books.

:?: It does stop. Insert clip into the front top of bolt carrier in the slot when bolt is locked back and mag is empty. Then push the rounds down. :D
