Well it turns out I need a new rifle.

Well, if it was me that had a $1000 and a belief that I needed a new .243, I'd get a Stevens 200 and put one of my old Weaver K4s on it and stick the change in the bank. But I notice you keep alluding to a preference for the Winchester 70 so I'll ask you, why isn't it time to indulge yourself with this $1000 and end up with what you really like?

I took my wife's Tikka T3 stainless/ synthetic chambered in .308 (same cartridge necked down) out yesterday. I gotta say... I truely like the feel and weight of it. I know those anti Tikka nuts will chime in any second but if I ever get another chambering and can't afford a Sako. Tikka is the way I would go. Only thing I don't like is the plastic.
Regards, Hitch

If you had $1000 to drop on a .243 what rifle would you choose?
Went through this when deciding on a coyote rifle for the wife's use at home. Ended up with a used Model Seven .243 for cheap. Works great, a little slower over the chrony due to the short barrel but within 300 yards, who cares.

Hey pharaoh2, why doncha git yor'n self an H&R Handi-Rifle in .243? With the cash you save, you can put on a big-ass Tasco, Simmons or Bullsh!tnell scope, attach a cheap bipod and have cash left over for shells too ;)

Take a look at the relatively new 300WSM offerings. The cartridge is inherently very accurate and can put moose down with authority. As the shell is so short about the same length as a 308 they can make the rifle 1 or 2 pounds lighter than many long actions. The 300WSM uses 10% less powder and in many cases slightly exceeds the MV of other full length 300 magnums. A 243 would be my last choice of a caliber offering, I think I would even look at the 7em em along with the 300WSM.

Oh man. f:P:2:

I've never owned one but what about a steyr pro hunter?
Well built and accurate but the safety is an arsehole of an arrangement. For that reason I wouldn't get one, but other guys might like it.
I have a ProHunter and don't mind the safety arrangement at all. What I do find with these rifles is the bolt handle a bit odd for manipulating, it's not quite a butterknife, nor regular "ball" style knob.

I have a 243 and 280 in ruger stainless, and a 260 and 308 in Model seven stainless. I have little experience with the M70, but i am sure it is plenty good too.

I still dont understand why you think you need that much gun for moose. A 60 gr partition in a 223 is plenty. Why beat your teeth loose with recoil for a bit of meat?

I'm trying to be humane about it. There's a huge margin between the 5.5 mm and the 6mm bullet. Just like the huge margin between 6mm and 6.5. That extra half mm is the difference between a bagged animal and a wounded moose. :)

Does your Ruger prefer certain bullet weights?

The new TC line of bolt guns all have an accuracy guarentee....

1/2MOA for the higer end ones and 1MOA for the more 'budget' models.

If I was shopping for a new bolt gun I would definatly have a look at the Icons.

Cheers!

Bingo!

I have always been a Remington fan boy, but as of late I have been eyeing the TC's pretty hard. 5r rifling, a smooth action, and adjustable trigger. they are also priced very reasonably.

The integral bases on the icon give me wood.

Oh, come on, you know it is .44mm difference, hardly notceable. I really wish someone would make a premium big game bullet for the .204 family.;)

My 243 is pretty easy to please, i shoot acceptable groups with anything from 65 gr v-max to 100 gr spire points. The coyotes and deer have developed a hatred for it over the last 10 years, however.:D
