Well it turns out I need a new rifle.

Bingo!

I have always been a Remington fan boy, but as of late I have been eyeing the TC's pretty hard. 5r rifling, a smooth action, and adjustable trigger. they are also priced very reasonably.

The integral bases on the icon give me wood.

I have seen a couple of Icons' close up at the range, I know 2 fellas that have them.

One in 22-250 and one in 243. Both guys sold their 'previously loved' rifles after buying and trying the Icons.

I don't know about the icon (too spendy) but they have a couple of more 'affordable' models that would seem to fit the bill..... For pharoh.

Spendy has nothing to do with why I'm not considering an Icon, the extra hundred bucks I can swing. I don't like the rifle. I saw one once I think in BPS in Calgary or in Cabelas in the US, one of the two. The first thing I didn't like was the weight, it was very heavy. I didn't like the feel of the stock, it wasn't comfortable in the grip and if I remember right on the comb. I also didn't like the drop box, it felt gross. Just not my cup of tea.

I do like the model 70, as you all know. The 700 has always fit me good. The Vangaurd has given me great luck in the past. I only had a new Hawkeye for a short time and I really liked the feel of the rifle, everything felt good on it, and that's the reason I started my other thread. It's as close to a new model 70 as I'm going to get in a true short action rifle built around a standard sporter platform. The only beef I have with the Vangaurd is the length of the action. On the two rifles I previously owned, I required extension rings to mount the scopes. As for the remingtons, I have no real beef with them at all. I've owned a few and while they never really gave me any problems, I felt they could have shot better.

As it sits right now, I'm leaning towards a 700 in one flavour or another.

My wifes Tikka T3 in 243 is a pretty slick little gun. Shoots as well as my Tikka Varmint in 6.5x55 as well...

Her 243 is even nicer for her as it has a 20 inch tube. Previous owner had the barrel cut and crowned and it makes a super light and packable gun for her.

If I didn't have a Sako A7 in 7/08 to play around with you can bet I would be hauling her rifle out to deer hunt as well LOL...

There was a very nice kimber 84 chambered in 257 roberts for sale on the EE forum. I think Rick F had it for sale. I believe it sold quickly. That rifle would fit the bill nicely. Cheers pete

I'm gonna stick my 2 cents worth in........why not, they're thinking of getting rid of the things anyways!
Even though I own two, both my 30-06, and 223, I would stay away from the remingtons unless your willing to put money into having them cleaned up........the finishing (inside and out) is horrible. Any howa (weather it be howa brand or weatherby) would be a good choice.........very usable barreled actions. Savage is a good gun, though I have a buddy that swears that he has had 2 with poor accuracy. I don't know about the new winchesters, but the old company was putting out poor quality from what I could see. I'd say marlin, but they are now being built in the same factory as remington...........scary! Tikka is well built, as is anything that comes out of the sako factory.........though you will have to get a long action (I'm not a fan of this with small cartridges). Don't get me started on the a-bolt, though the new x-bolt seems to be built a bit better.
OK, that's about three cents; do I round up, or down? :stirthepot2:

My vote goes to the Icon, Tikka close second, but if cost is an issue I really don't think you can go wrong with a savage. Alot of bang for the buck with most of the savages, but I DO love my icon in .308
