We'll now I'm looking for a hunting dog...

Elijah Lee.....please do not buy a lab or similar off of Kijiji. When we got into the lab worls the first thing we were told was that the purchase price of the dog was about the cheapest expense we were ever going to have. It was 100 percent true. I can only speak for Labs but each breed ahs various congenital defects that need to be cleared in order to be registered. Does the registration paper mean they won't have issues??? No certainly not. However, a dilligent breeder will have ensured that the dogs are cleared by appropriate vets and guarantee or not, that clearance per se is worth a significant amount. We had to put our girl down in December ($750 papered dog from 2004) and just recently purchased a new one for $1500. If you are unsure about breeders etc, check with the Canadian Kennel Club or your local breed sepcific organization and find out what's out there. I can't imagine having a 3 or 4 year old dog who is fully a member of your famly and finding out they are displastic etc. and having the choice between a second mortgage for the surgery or putting them down.

10 months ago I got a beautiful 1 1/2 year old male black lab off kijji free whos awesome and has a killer sniffer on him and very trainable.3 little indian girls had raised him from a pup they bought of a breeder no papers but he has all the classic lab lines.Thanks--Dieseldog!

Most I ever paid for a dog was the $400 we paid 18 months ago for our most recent lab (she was 10 weeks). Found her on Kijjiji...pure lab and both parents are hunters. She's turned out to be a natural so far. Real test will be this fall when duck season opens...but given how she's performing for the training so far, she's likely going to turn out to be our best dog ever. Point is, you can find them on Kijiji...you just have to be particular and make sure you do your homework with the seller. I was there for over an hour and insisted on meeting both parents. Ended up making some new hunting connections in the process. Good luck and condolences.

Elijah Lee, best advice I can give you is to buy a dog from a reputable breeder that specializes in labs that hunt, and $125. per leg (500 bucks) isn't going to do it budget at least $200 per leg or more. My wife bought me my present lab as a birthday present, she was a Kijiji special. A lovely dog, beautiful kind gentle animal. Doesn't have one shred of interest in hunting and can not be trained as such in any economical humane manner that I am aware of so she is a pet.

Again do some research and buy a dog from a reputable breeder who hunts his dogs. Forget the Kijiji route as it's a huge crap shoot as to what you will get. I have had the pleasure of owning and hunting with some of the very best hunting labs a man could possible have. So I have some experience in these matters. Each of those dogs came form a good breeder that hunted generations of labs before the ones I got. You want a good dog you pay premium dollars for the basic dog then you put in the time and effort to train it and bring out the qualities in the dog. Makes your time in the field that much more enjoyable for all concerned.

Right! ....... cheap out on a gun and you can always flog it off. Cheap out on a dog that doesn't hunt and you just bought yourself a nice pet that you keeping for 12yrs or more.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I hope this will at least put a smile on for you...

Chester and Earl are going hunting. Chester says to Earl, "I'll send my dog out to see if there are any ducks out in the pond. If there aren't any ducks out there, I'm not going hunting."
So he sends the dog out to the pond. The dog comes back and barks twice. Chester says, "Well I'm not going to go out. He only saw two ducks out there."
Earl says, "You're going to take the dog's barks for the truth?" Earl doesn't believe it, so he goes to look for himself. When he gets back he says, "I don't believe it where did you get that dog? There really are only two ducks out there!"

Chester says, "Well, I got him from the breeder up the road. If you want, you can get one from him, too."

So Earl goes to the breeder and says he wants a dog like the one his friend Chester has. The breeder obliges and Earl brings the dog home, tells it to go out and look for ducks.
Minutes later the dog returns with a stick in it's mouth and starts humping Earl's leg.
Outraged, Earl takes the dog back to the breeder and says, "This dog is a fraud. I want my money back!"

The breeder asks Earl what the dog did. So Earl tells him that when he sent the dog out to look for ducks, it came back with a stick in its mouth and started humping his leg.

The breeder says, "Earl, all he was trying to tell you was that there are more f*cking ducks out there than you can shake a stick at!"
