Out looking in my spot again for the Ninja Ruffled Grouse I missed the day before, and while I was listening at one spot, all of a sudden my eyes caught movement to my left approx 20 feet away, and like two ghosts out came two Blacktail Does.
I couldn't move, and they managed to walk within 10 feet of me before stopping and trying to figure me out. The wind was at their backs so they only had their eyes to use on me, and here I was in the middle of the trail facing them with my Blacktail tag burning a hole in my pocket, and what do yah know my Maverick 88 12 gauge shotgun had one in the chamber and 2 in the mag...of 7 1/2 shot for grouse. DOH!
That's right...10 feet away, clear shot, wrong shotgun load.
I manged to slowly unload one shell, and reach for my slugs on the sling, but the jig was up...too much movement, and they bounced away.
I see a break action single shot shotgun in my future.
Anyway I reloaded the shotgun with slugs, and had a walk around the area, but they where long gone.
Lots of deer sign in the area, poop, and bedding etc.
Further up the road was a Buck (minus antlers), but he was at the crest of the dirt road and about 400 yards away...so too far, and no idea what was on the other side of the rise.
Anyway that is my story and I'm sticking to it.
