Out looking in my spot again for the Ninja Ruffled Grouse I missed the day before, and while I was listening at one spot, all of a sudden my eyes caught movement to my left approx 20 feet away, and like two ghosts out came two Blacktail Does.

I couldn't move, and they managed to walk within 10 feet of me before stopping and trying to figure me out. The wind was at their backs so they only had their eyes to use on me, and here I was in the middle of the trail facing them with my Blacktail tag burning a hole in my pocket, and what do yah know my Maverick 88 12 gauge shotgun had one in the chamber and 2 in the mag...of 7 1/2 shot for grouse. DOH!
That's right...10 feet away, clear shot, wrong shotgun load.

I manged to slowly unload one shell, and reach for my slugs on the sling, but the jig was up...too much movement, and they bounced away.
I see a break action single shot shotgun in my future. :D

Anyway I reloaded the shotgun with slugs, and had a walk around the area, but they where long gone.
Lots of deer sign in the area, poop, and bedding etc.

Further up the road was a Buck (minus antlers), but he was at the crest of the dirt road and about 400 yards away...so too far, and no idea what was on the other side of the rise.

Anyway that is my story and I'm sticking to it.

Murphy's frickin law!
We're heading out for Whitetail tomorrow. Hopefully, me double, triple checking my gear will keep that bastard Mr. Murphy away!

12 ga with bird shot at 10 ft?
I'd have gone for a head or neck shot.

yup! it's a doe, an honest 10ft? shoot it in the face. should be enough energy to bring down a tiny van Isle doe.

pounce on it ninja style and slit it's throat :)

Eh.... , it's very impressive when they get that close from you, the heart beat must of doubled at least ;) .

It's usually the opposite, we see grouse that we can't shoot while deer hunting most of the time. Like others said, at that distance, I also think the bird shot would of taken her down  :D .

Your spot sounds promising, you know now where to find them.

Good luck

You did the right thing... you probably coulda done the job with birdshot but opted for the right tool for the job. You might not get another chance like that but you should feel good that you made the right choice....

Thanx Rocks. :)

I learned allot about myself, and my equipment today.

Good call go for the slugs Calum (even though they spooked)

Couldn't imagine shooting a deer with 71/2 shot no matter the range.

But I like the ninja pounce and slit the throat method.:dancingbanana:

Hey Calum, the areas where the does are is shotgun with shot only, no SLUGS  Unless you are talking about illegally getting them of course......

Are you implying something?

I'd say that you used sound judgement by not risking a bird shot that may have resulted in a wounded/escaped game......like you said, a double bbl shotgun is usually a great assist in scenarios like that.

On many ocassions in the past during pheasant hunts - I carried a firearm loaded with both buck and bird shot mostly due to opportunities to take a Barking Deer and also as last resort action due to an emerging leopard that could've had it's priorities a bit mixed up in the heat of things :)

BTW, it could've been the ninja ruff conjuring up some sort of illusion to get you off it's track :D

Man that is rough

God gives us these opertunities to see the game up close and personal like that with no way to bag em as a kind of punishment for asking him for those lottery winnings. LOL.
