Probably because those A-bolts shoot good right out of the box and there is little need to re barrel or rebuild to get a shooter;) On the other hand there are tons of remingtons that don't shoot and often the gun is rebarreled and restocked and there are so many left over actions from remington that that did not work out:D

To be serious the remington 700 action is one prefered by rifle builders. There are losts of used 700s out there and they are easy to work with. Cheap too! Custom rifles built on 700 actions make very fine rifles and I will not argue with that. The original poster asked what we though about A-bolts? He did not ask which action would make the better custom rifle. My opinion is that many 700s are crap out of the box and need work to make em shoot. I have no doubt that your 700s shoot well, but the fact that you made customs out the actions with special barrels and special stocks seem to support my position that 700s need work to make em shoot!

BTW, I do not see many customs built on Tikka actions either. Maybe there is no reason to improve a Tikka or they are difficult to work with, or expensive.
Not too many customs built on savage or ruger or weatherby either.

If I wanted to build a custom rifle, I could score a used 700 action or rifle in minutes, and if I was willing to wait, I could get one really cheap! That's got to tell you something?

i did not like the feel of the winchester at all seem like it had a long length of pull or sumtihng.

the tikkas of course were smooth (already knew that had one) and the shoulder real nice.


i found the sig kinda cheap feeling, but it was also pretty smooth.

then i shouldered just about every A-bolt the had.

Medallions,hunter, stainless stalkers, mossy oak stalkers,stalker.

i must say its not the smoothest feeling bolt but i really did that 60 degree pull. i think it would be good if wearing gloves and quiker.

about the mag floorplate seemed to be pretty strait forward to me, i dont think it would bother me at all.

so my next rifle is definatly going to be an A-bolt.

I'm glad you found a rifle you like. I don't think you'll be sorry buying a Browning. Congrats on your future aquisiton.

And about the whole custom 700 thing...

If your into cars, you'll probably know that the 350 Chevy smallblock is the prefered engine to use. I'm not saying its the best out there, I own Chevy's, but prefer the Ford small block. But the Chevy gets the nod because the parts are cheap and available. As a quick sidenote: If you were to compare part numbers for a Ford or Chevy, say a flat topped or domed aftermarket piston, the mfr numbers are the same. The catalouge numbers say the fords are more expensive. Coincedence? I think not! :D My point is like the Chevy, the 700, the 10/22, the 870 or the 1911all just got the nod as the accepted action.
 
I own a Browning Medallion in 7mm Rem Mag and a Rem 700 VSSF in 223. I love both rifles. I find my Rem a little tempermental when tuning but my A-bolt is a cinch to tune and stays on.

I'm sure most topics were covered at one time or another.If we are going too just use the search and look at old archives then we might as well shut down this whole forum!!:mad: The way I see it ...if you want to join in on the topic then do so.If you're tired of hearing about it....go elsewhere. Easy, that was Oh, 12 pages ago, and I have had a few additional responses on this thread, and about 20 pm's back and forth from the author of the thread... What Im tired of is jackasses not reading past the first page, and making a comment. Like the search function, a bit of practise navigating, or reading the site will result in less stupid responses... (Like the one above)
And, the benifit of using the search function is you can drag up an old conversation, read it, get some information on it, and restart the thread with your question. But at 80 odd posts, you might not know that, so consider yourself informed:slap: :slap: ...

I did this with mine in a 25-06 and it opens quite nicely. When I need to chamber another round, I try not to point my rifle in the air and wait for the bolt to open.

I own a couple Sakos. One in 270 the other a 22/250. I also own an old A bolt. A BBR in 7 mag. If i had one wish it would be replace the bolts of my sakos with the bolt from my A bolt. The A bolt is a fantastic design. The 60 degree throw(i think its 60) is very fast, and smooth as silk. My sako bolts are ok. But not near as nice as the A bolt.

As for the funky clip design on the A bolt. Geeze. It takes me all of 5 seconds to get the clip in. It takes some practice but what doesnt.

This thread's question is "What's the real deal with A-Bolts?"

The real question, and more importantly, is why do you virtually never see any A-bolts for sale used?

'Nuff said.... ;)
