What’s a good .410 lately ?

My favorite 410's are hand-me-downs from my father(Mossberg 183DC and grandmother (Iver Johnson Champion). I must have 15-20 boxes of shoshells and a dozen boxes of slugs dating back to as early as the early 50's. Doubt any of it will get fired in my lifetime. I have so many other choices to choose from and I'd be surprised if either gun has been fired in the last 40-50 years but I can't bring myself to sell it all and I've little interest in using them.

I just ordered a huglu sxs in 28 gauge with double triggers. I can run two different chokes/loads depending on situation and have both available instantly. Prophet river has some 410s in stock as well.

I can’t speak to the quality of the huglu just yet, but after chasing birds the last few years I think double barrels are the way to go. I haven’t seen a 410 semi, or pump that feeds super reliably either. The hard part is figuring out the combination of features you’re looking for.

I attended a pheasant tournament and one hunter, about 65 years old, had a 410, from what you discribed. Geez, he was hammering roosters left right and center with that little pump. I'm sure they are around somewhere; have fun shopping!

Northern Ontario you can walk right up to them. 1/4oz of 7.5s or 6s works great. I prefer to shoot them on the wing so sometimes I have to run at them to get them to fly. Its amazing they haven't been wiped out. Down in Southern ontario where I live what few we have are like rockets. You hear the wings at 40 to 50yards as they flush. Haven't seen one down my way in years.

Northern Alberta, they'd flush close so I missed a lot of them with my 12 gauge to the point where my beloved GSD Tara would give me "the look" when I missed again.........

Miss you Tara.

These days I carry a single shot Baikal, 2.5" .410 shells.

A friend uses a 410 SxS when hunting released roosters over my pointing dog, it works fine to 20-25 yards. But for any kind of wild birds, be it pheasant, sharptails or Huns, he switches to a 20 gauge.

I have 4 huglu double guns. 3 sxs and 1 ou and all have been flawless. All well regulated with decent triggers. I have a 20ga 202b which is dual trigger sxs and its one of my favorite game guns. Heavier than it has to be but very fast and light enough to carry for miles.
I prefer to wing shoot my birds so I dont mind the odd pellet. Im not good enough with a shotgun to head shoot a sitting grouse without getting an odd pellet in the meat anyway. I use a scoped rimfire or in the preban days a 9mm

These huglu seem too good to be true for the price. I don’t have any experience with expensive shotguns to compare it to anything but I’m sure it’ll serve it’s intended purpose.

As far as the weight goes I think the 28 gauge is built on a mini action and is quite a bit lighter at maybe a bit over 5 pounds.

Theyre built on scaled actions. The wrist on the straight stocks is thicker than need be. Still comfortable but my 20ga stock is thicker in diameter than my 12ga guns
The 28s are nice and sleek. My 410 is a pistol grip with sideplates but the action is small

The triggers are gritty, and they are a fair bit heavier than my higher quality SxS shotguns, but other than that, they are decent shotguns for the price.

I've had one of the 500 hunting/field versions with wood stocks here for a long time, its been really good.
