What’s the best 5 shot group you’ve shot with an sks and irons?

10 shots, 5" at 200 yards. One of the 5 Chinese SKS I bought from Lever Arms for $75 each. That was a looong time ago, no way I could do that now, even wearing my spectacles. :)

I got it down to 3 1/4” at 100y with hornady sst, my 53 Tula didn’t like the mfs at all at 100y. Came close to a five shot group in the 2-2 1/4” size but I had a flyer or I pulled th shot lol, had a hard time making out the orange diamond on the while paper. Too much bright on bright, will revisit it with a black aiming point another time.

This would’ve made me really happy if the fifth shot was in the same place as the first four, it was with the norc white box non corrosive. Overall I’m happy with how this gun shoots at 100y with iron sights after only shimming the action, definitely good enough to hunt deer and bear with next season. Will be a handy truck/bush gun.

When you say "best" group, you are asking about the luckiest group. The one where the flyer went into the group instead of out of it.

The "best" group is fun to shoot and brag about, but is not indicative of the rifle or ammo.

Reading about good groups here gives us a false idea of the capability of the rifle.

I built a dedicated heavy barrelled target rifle specifically for testing ammo. I wanted to see what milsurp was capable of.

I found that handloads with match bullets were easy to make that would shoot under a minute.

Milsurp ran 1.5 to 2 minutes.

So a SKS would add to that, for an average group of 3 to 4 minutes. The SKS has mediocre bedding and a rather crude sight.

When I say best group I mean just that, the best group you’ve shot with your sks, if you look at the two 3 1/4” groups I just posted they are pretty much identical in pattern one is just rotated 180deg. I’d say that’s a decent indication of what that rifle will shoot, which is the best group I’ve shot on paper at 100y with an sks and irons.

Thanks Ganderite, I’m definitely happy with it. It’s ironic to think that a 3-3.5” is something to be happy about at 100y haha, but it’s an sks after all. I’m just having fun shooting it again, it hasn’t been out of the safe in a couple years. Always puts a grin on your face when doing a couple mag dumps with an sks!

I'd see if you can borrow one off a buddy without a chrome lined bore . and see how your groups are then . and as you say it might be just an sks but they are one of the most fun and reliable rifles ever built . and interesting looking . there was a lot of workmanship involved in building those rifles .most so called mass produced modern stuff makes me want to puke. there all plastic . as for the tightest group I have ever shot with an sks it was with a scope and not iron sights . a non chrome barrel and non corrosive ammo at 50 yards and they were all touching .

but once the barrel warmed up they started to string . sorry if I'm a little off topic .

I have one that’s not chrome lined but it has a scope one it, I’ll have to shoot it at 100 and compare the two. It’s shimmed the same as my laminate one and zeroed at 50y, was shooting nice groups. They really are great little rifles, I think I’ll be bear hunting in the spring with the one with iron sights. If I’m motivated to smooth out the trigger over the winter I’ll do some polishing and see if that helps it any.

First time I ever actually tried to shoot groups with mine. Normally I just use my SKS to blast clays on the berm. I was actually surprised. Pretty consistent 1-2 inch groups at 50m.

About 2.5-3" at 50m. 5-6" at 100m. Honestly, for what it's intended to do, that's fine for me. I mostly shoot inflated balloons with it. I'd rather not actually "see" just how accurate it isnt lol.

9 out of 10 shots on a standard IPSC target at 530 yards. Shot with a shortened barrel SKS with a Holosun red dot sight mounted on a Wartak rail. Standard Chinese ball ammo. Sorry, no pics!

I will have to find the pictures from this years sight in. I clover leafed with barnaul soft points at 50 and printed just over an inch at 100. The sst's were about 2 inches at 50 and 4 inches at 100. I was shocked . With bulk corrosive it typically shoots about 2.5 - 3 inch groupings at 100.
