What 22lr do you like for hunting?

I like quiet cci bullets for gophers , if shooting larger animals I use cci velocitor which have the most power of any 22 lr they also shoot excellent in my savage mark 11

He also has/had a die that uniforms the rims for identical ignition shot to shot . Until your post i had no idea he was still in business as i bought from him 20 years ago . His die will swage every bullet to the exact same diameter and uniforms the rim . You can turn almost any ammo into match grade by uniforming it .

I remember thinking about ordering his original accurizer over 10 years ago, but never got around to it. His new line looks to be high quality and I will be ordering an accurizer (tool #3?) and the holder/snips that turn round nose bullets into flat wad cutter style to really smack small game hard. His websites says you can turn 50 rounds into wad cutters in 3 minutes so it must be as simple as insert bullet, snip, done. I see that the #3 tool is double ended with a .223 diameter on one end and .224 on the other to really fine tune the bullets to your gun.

How much of a difference in accuracy would the resizing die make when shooting bulk ammo? I've never bothered with match ammo.

In my limited and recent hunting experience, I used what shot best in my rifles and aimed for the head. For me that ended up being Federal standard velocity 40gr lrn out of my cz 455 lux and CCI 40gr cprn out of my stevens 300f trapper. These seem to do the job on grouse and squirrels. In thick woods the grouse seem to not place the direction of my shot and I can usually get off at least a second shot if I need it.

As a side note, I've noticed in my war against the squirrels on a friends property that they seem to undergo far less vigorous death throes when head shot with round nose compared to hollow points. They also seem to flop more vigorously the greater the velocity of ammo... CCI Stingers being the "floppiest" ammo. Anyone seen this effect before?

I have indeed! I shot 1 squirrel and it did 2 compete summer salts before it expired. Then I saw it was a neck shot severing the spine. Adeline?

Trash Panda.... lmao good one

That is what a bloke at work calls them. He has chickens and turkeys and it would appear that they are his sworn enemy! You would think his dogs scare them away bit they have become very wary as of late. This Wednesday I will go and see if I can get a fox or 3 and bag another coyote at his place. The foxes would explain the lack of bunnies so something must be done.

For grouse, standard velocity or subsonic solids. CCI being my preferred choice for reliability.

For gophers my favorite round is CCI's Subsonic HP. It's a 40gr with a very large HP cavity going 1050fps(iirc). It knocks the gophers back with a satisfying "whump". For longer range shots the Velociter wins with its carried energy downrange. Mini-Mag HP's get a nod too as they just work well in all my .22's.

Segmenting ammunition is sort of the "new kid on the block", and from the few boxes I've fired at gophers and a couple apples I've exploded side-by-side with other types of ammunition, I can tell you that if you're willing to dish out the extra bucks, these things perform above what I thought was capable with the .22LR cartridge. It doesn't add anything new to the ballistics, that is what it is when it comes to .22lr, but the terminal effects of that segmenting ammo is very impressive! Just don't use them on things you want to eat, unless you're going for head shots.

I use three different rifles . Shoot Federal 525 and Remington Golden Bullet value packs and bucket. All are 36 grain hollow points. 1280fps.

When I am backpacking or busting brush, I use a Browning Buck Mark Sporter rifle scoped with Leupold VX-2 3-9X33mm EFR ... other times I use a CZ 453 scoped with a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14X40mm AO.... the dedicated squirrel rifle is an Anschutz 1416 with Leupold VX-2 6-18x40mm AO... mostly with CCI SV's or Subsonic.

CCI velocitors for me. A hard hitting bullet that's very accurate out of my Ruger 1022. It's unfortunate they are also some of the most expensive 22s out there but you get what you pay for.

+1
The avg expansion of the velocitor (.375" OD) is very impressive. No other .22lr can touch it. And with >1400fps velocity you can reach out farther then most other .22lr when hunting.

I've been shooting the federal bulk outa my cooey. Yesterday I was shooting it, CCI shorts (710fps), and CCI stingers. I'm a newer shooter and most off shots are most likely me, not the ammo. That being said, the shorts and stingers grouped much tighter.

I use a beautiful old Cooey 39, with a B and L 1 1=2 X 5 scope for every day....it eats anything well. If things get serious, I use an ANNIE sporter with a VXIII....it has expensive taste in ammo.
