Ok, I am a total newbie at guns so I need some help...

I want a Stainless Steel 30-06 that is low maintenance for deer and bear hunting but mostly deer. It should have a camo pattern. (under $1000.00)

I hear you are the experts... what do you recommend.

Savage and Tikka make rifles with camo stocks, so does Browning but they are well over $1000.00, likely Savage will be your choice as you will want to put a scope on it. FS

My advice would be to forget the camo. It really isn't worth the extra coin you lay out. If you really have your heart set on camo though, I'd say to pick a rifle with a synthetic stock and then after you've got scope and rings send it to someone that does the camo painting and get the whole thing done the way you want it.

Selecting a rifle more of a personal preference...

Hello,

I think you would be making a good choice in purchasing a 30-06 cal. rifle. It is an all around good caliber and is good for both small and large game. I agree with one of the other comments... you should forget about the camo stock it really isn't worth the money. As far as what make and model you should buy. Well, in my opinion that really depends on the shooter. There are a lot of good brands out there but it all comes down to what feels best in your hands. Everyone is built different and will have there own "favorite". I would suggest trying a few different models and take the results to make your decision. There are so many options...bolt action, semi auto , pump action, magazine or floor plate ect. Are you sure you want stainless....it will cost you. You may be able to save money by going to a synthetic stock and blued barrel and put the money you saved into a better quality firearm. Happy hunting!!!!

Buy a Remington 700 SPS in your fave caliber. 30/06 is a great choice!

Add a good scope and mounts, something like a Bushnell 3200 or a Leupold VXII in 2x7 or 3x9.

They come with a decent stock as is, but sometime down the road, when funds allow, you can update the stock with a good fiberglass jobby, like this Bansner High Tech. It'll be all the rifle you will ever need.

What ABB said .

One to keep in mind is the Stevens 200 - cost 329
Rings/base 40
Leupold FX II 419
SO 788 b4 tax. Couple cans of Krylon spray paint (10-12 $) for the camo job.

And away you go

Brnos are always good stong rifles, so I would at least have a look at them.

At one time I very much wanted a Wichester M-70 Supergrade in .30-06, and I don't know why I never got one. I guess at times, a lack of cash goes hand in hand with a lack in judgement.

My wife's Husqavarna is a fine rifle, and you can still find them for sale from time to time.

Buying a 30-06

Like ABB said, go to a range and try some out. Talk to the owners and ask them what they like about the gun, and make your own decisions.

First you have to take into consideration your size, height, weight, and reach.

Second what do you want to use it for, Moose, Deer, or Bear?

It doesn't matter if it's a Remington, Winchester, or Tikka. If it fits and doesn't kick the S**t out of you, then buy that one.

I wouldn't buy a really light gun, I find heavier guns help soak up the recoil. But the new recoil pads do make a difference.
If you really like a certain kind and it doesn't quite fit, talk to a gun smith about having it altered to fit you.
Just my two cents.

I like my Ruger 77 MKII stainless and I was even able to find a left handed one in stainless with a lam stock. Most people I asked before I bought said Ruger and one or two said Rem but it was $1000 and the Ruger was $750 stainless. Stainless was only $50 more than blued. No big deal.
