Not surprisingly there's lots of votes for Ruger, and right now the 77 Hawkeye could be the best value out there.
I've got a beat up M-54 Winchester in .270 coming my way, and my intention is to use it to build a custom '06. The action is slick, I particularly like the #### on closing feature, and the trigger is quite good. I'll re-barrel it with a Krieger sporter weight CM barrel, but I'll decide on the barrel length after I choose the stock. Initially I was going to go with the new McMillan carbon fiber stock, but a high tech stock somehow seems out of place on a rifle built in 1932. I'm playing around with the idea of a good quality wood stock, but I might split the difference between new and old and go with a laminate. Once the stock has been chosen, I'll choose the barrel length that balances the piece out the best. The look I'm after is similar to the rifle Stuart Edward White had built by Wundhammer on a 1903 Springfield, although it will be lacking the refinements, this will definitely be a working rifle. In keeping with the proper lines, this would seem to support the choice of a longish barrel, as was the style in those days. I might not even scope it, if I can find a micrometer adjustable aperture small enough to be suitable for use on a sporting rifle, but if I do it will be with my ugly old Khales fixed 6X. I'm far from being a purist, and the metal will be finished in one of the super tough bake on finishes. I'll wait until the rifle is here before I get too carried away though, but I do have a short list of stocks.
