What 9mm with a real safety to get

Hi all,

Both my wife and i are waiting on our rpals. We are new to pistols so we are unsure what to buy.

We went to a local range and tried a few 9mm pistols. (1911, glock 17, cz shadow, sig p226)

My wife liked the sig the best. However, it has no safety! That freaks me out.

What are some other options out there that have a real safety like a 1911?

Why would not having a safety freak you out? I actually don't know anyone who uses theirs. I could see if you were to carry it, but that's a non issue in this country. That being said, go with the CZ.
 
My 2 cents is for you and your wife to go take a course from a reputable trainer. If possible borrow 2 different guns and use them in the course to try and figure out your preferences. That'll give you a pretty good start on picking a pistol.
 
The lack of a safety shouldn't turn you away from a specific pistol. Don't think you'll be carrying the pistol so shouldn't really matter if there's no safe. Heavy DA trigger is a pretty good safety feature. Hammer down with a round in the chamber is how I'm carrying my Norc 226 clone in 40S&W. 1911 cocked and locked.
 
ALWAYS keep in mind that the MOST IMPORTANT safety is the one between the ears. Remember your ACTS.

FWIW, Glock has 3 safeties: Trigger, firing and drop.

That being said, all are solid pistols. Get what fits you well and rings yer bell.
 
Your finger is the saftey. Being unload is your saftey.
Why would your finger be on the trigger of a loaded gun when your not ready to shoot?

Safties are a non-issue in canada. This will be a lesson you will learn very quickly as you progress with your experience with restricted firearms. Undoubtly this will be a lesson you will learn the hard way.
So just buy what you feel comfortable with.
 
I agree with most here. And personally love my sig.

However I think you should check out the beretta 92 series pistols. And the px4 I think as well.

The safety/de-cocker actually has a rotating part that blocks the firing pin....
 
Wow that a lot of responses very quickly.

Both my wife and i will be taking a course this winter. Most of the courses i have seen seem to want you to have your own pistol.

I also want us both to take the black badge course. Which means a holster. I don't want to have an issue re-holstering.
 
As others here have alluded to, regardless of whether or not they have an external safety, all modern handguns are designed to be safe; with various internal safeties, decockers, safe actions, etc. If you as the shooter do your part (i.e. Keep your finger out of the trigger guard unless you are ready to pull the trigger) then any modern gun you buy will be more than capable of doing its part to keep both you and the public at large safe.

If a shooter is not ready, willing or capable of doing their part to keep the pistol safe, then that shooter needs to seriously consider staying away from firearms, in everyone's best interest. No external safety will be a fail safe. It will only delay the inevitable.

I'll suggest that both you and the missus buy whatever guns tickle your fancy, buy good holsters and spare mags and trust that the course you take will help you develop the confidence and skill to safely handle your pistols, even under the stresses of competition! Shooting is fun and safe. Follow your training once you have it and don't overthink it!
 
Ruger SR9 has a trigger and transfer bar safety like a Glock and a manual slide safety like a 1911 that also locks the trigger. Practise drills until it becomes muscle memory.
 
I have a 92FS. Love it, but I have no use for the safety. It's one of the only two things I would change about that gun (that and the crazy heavy double action trigger pull)/
 
I have been shooting for over 25 years, so it is not a new concept to keep my finger off the trigger. I had 1 ND when i was 12 and i learned then. The beating my father gave me was good reniforcement of this practice.

Most of you are saying that i don't need a safety.

My 308 has a safety
My 3 shotguns all have a safety
My 10/22 has a safety
My sks has a very crappy safety, but still a safety

It seems crazy to me that many pistols don't have a safety and many of you support that.

With all due respect, this statement worries me.

It seems to absolve an individual of responsible firearm handling and dismisses one of the only reasonable components of our Canadian Firearms act.
