What AR to buy?

In a different thread TDC said there is barley a difference between an 18" barrel and an 11" barrel. Now he is saying the 1" gain is "substantial".
So don't worry what he says lol

True but your not understanding the big picture, there is a huge difference in reliability and velocity when you get to 10 inch and shorter. They can all be tuned to run but you need to know what your doing and how to balance the gas system properly. A quality factory short rifle will be tuned correctly but when the average Joe takes their 16 inch and swaps out the barrel for a 10.5 inch or shorter they usually have problems and end up changing buffers, springs and sometimes bolt carriers to deal with the shorter dwell time.
The velocity drop below 11 inch is also pretty steep per inch while 18 inch to 11 inch doesn't have as steep of a drop. Something about the 223/5.56 round needs at least 11 inches of barrel to make decent velocity. which is probably more what TDC was talking about.

When it comes to AR's do worry about what TDC says, he knows what he's talking about. He doesn't always word it well and usually gets carried away bashing bullpups but he knows AR's.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all of your help. I think I have decided to get a LE6920. Now trying to decide on which one to get. Can someone fill me in on the differences between the socom and the Magpul edition LE6920MP??. Is it worth the $400 more?

Which one would you buy?

Thanks T

Can someone please explain to me why anyone buys a rifle in a 10 inch barrel? I'm not getting it...

Because they look awesome?
At 100yds or less it doesn't matter what length the barrel is as long as it's reliable?
It allows you to do commando rolls in the living room without hitting the TV stand?
When your assaulting your home you are less likely to ding up the walls and get your wife mad at you?
Extra concussion blast when firing to give you and everyone around you a headache faster.

Did I mention that they look awesome?

What length should people buy?

I want a 10 inch in 9mm next, maybe even 7.5 inch.

The original intent was to create a compact firearm that would give you rifle capabilities to be used in close conditions such as FIBUA/CQB and during mounted operations where the firearm would be used/manoeuvred within the vehicle. Imagine having to use a full length service rifle as you're trying to fight in destroyed terrain in FIBUA/CQB. I've had to drag my ass through some pretty unconventional and small/irregular places to get to where I needed to go and trust me, I was always happy when the rifle was smaller when it came to working in tight places and where I had to scramble across a bridge-ladder bridging a blown out hallway, roof or stairwell.

And as I had stated before, a properly tuned CQBR is just as reliable, yet my statement regarding such was ignored.

I don't think I've bought a firearm based on how cool it looks, but on the task and its capability within said task. To do otherwise is just foolish in my opinion.

Ah ok thanks, I was just wondering because a guy next to me at Burke the other day had a 10.5inch with a bipod on and he kept asking me to spot his shots when he was trying to hit the gongs. And I just couldn't understand what he was doing, but whatever to each their own. Not for me then... I'm obviously not a military guy, private military contractor, member of a swat team and won't be assaulting houses any time soon.

Do people use small barrels for 2 gun/3 gun competitions? Is there an advantage? If there is one in going small, why don't they go with a pistol calibre carbine?

With the right training an operator can readily make hits on static X-rays out to 500m and good hits to 300m using a 10.3" bbl.

As for competition, sure, whatever floats your boat. We were required to be able to make hits COM on a static target 200m distant with the MP5s during qualifications. However pistol rounds are never going to give you what rifle rounds can, no matter barrel length.

what for my core15? Sure straight trade then onto the ee she goes. :p

It's a nice rifle but not really my style. It looks like a match setup as opposed to a mil setup. I would be interested if you had a legit hk416 upper though.

Was talking about a PWS MK107, would go for a Mk114 as well. Already have a Mk112 and a Mk109 that could use a sibling in the safe :)
That's my franken AR with ATRS 18 inch stainless barrel, spikes upper, DD BCG, Samson Evo 15 inch Handguard, Stag lower, CAA sniper stock. She's a shooter.
