by my question in the subject title, I'm referring to books/magazines to read (ie. Cartridges of the World) and websites that provide information on basics, have tutorials or instructional guides and perhaps even reviews on different equipment used for shooting and hunting.

what publications and websites do you find useful (aside from the awesomeness of CGN!)?

If you are at all interested in military history, shooting military surplus firearms, or simply a cost-effective way of entering into the shooting sports (whether for target shooting or hunting), I would recommend ww w.surplusrifle.com (plus the related forums) and www.milsurps.com (a forum sponsor). The first one provides many articles on various military surplus firearms, detailed dissassembly/assembly instructions and other aspects of the hobby, often emphasizing how to enhance your marksmanship and further your enjoyment of the sport without breaking the bank. Milsurps.com has more detailed information on different rifle types for the more serious collector, and seems to have particularly knowledgeable people who frequent their forums.

If shooting military surplus becomes a serious interest, there are several other boards that might also tickle your fancy, such as gunboards.com and "Parallax Bill's Curio and Relic" discussion forums. Gunboards.com has forums on Swedish and other Scandanavian hunting firearms that are particularly usefull in the event that you get interested in the many rifles that have been imported in recent years from that part of the world and are currently available at reasonable prices (see Tradeex.ca, another sponsor of this site).

If the forums here happen to kindle some interest in shooting battlerifles like the M1 Garand or M14 varients (such as the Norinco M14S), you might find ww w.battlerifles.com to be very informative about that class of rifles.

If you lived in Ontario and were interested in hunting, I would have suggested the Huntontario.com forums, but seeing that you are in BC, suggest that you do a search for a similar board that might cover hunting opportunities in your area.

Good Luck,

Frank

PS. If you have any particular area of interest, mentioning that would greatly help narrow down the ideas that others might suggest/offer to you.

Frank, you've posted answers in a few of my threads...thank you for sharing your depth of knowledge and experience!

my interests will lie mainly in large game hunting...moose in particular, but, because I don't know much of anything that is firearm related, aside from what I've read in the PAL manual and on these forums, I'm looking for suggestions in reading material to catch me up to speed.

I'm a late bloomer...going to be 29 this June and I'm 100% cityboy. ask me questions about technology and astronomy and I can answer your questions, as those are my main pursuits and hobbies currently...but I know very little about the outdoor life aside from some hiking and campground camping.

I need to take some crash courses! one reason why I will take CORE very soon too. fortunately for me it seems I have friends and contacts who will take a greenhorn out deer hunting, since they're aplenty...but if I can learn something to make it not such a trial, I will! :)

edit - I also know a lot of my understand what is and what isn't will come from learning laws and legislation and getting clarification of whta is and what isn't from those who have been navigating it for years.

You may find that the current edition of the "Gun Digest" would be helpful. It comes out every year, usually late summer, early fall. The 2008 digest was the 62nd edition. It has articles and reviews touching on just about every aspect of the shooting world, plus a catalogue of all current sporting arms, brief specs, and prices(MSRP).Some folks make these a collection just by themselves.Nevertheless these digests make for some good reading. They are available from most sporting goods stores or from Amazon books.ENJOY

Lyman reloading manual. (Or any other I suspect. Everything you ever wanted to know about cartridges. It is fully half the equation, but the guns alwasy get the glory.

Look for some books by Craig Boddington. When I first got involved with guns and hunting, I signed out a few of his books from the Library.
