I don't know a lot about ARs, i did have an old colt once that was nice but i sold it. Im in the market now for another, but there are so many brand names out there, what is good, what is bad?

I hear rock river arms is good, then i see stag arms etc... whats a good solid AR thats not gonna cost a million bucks!

It used to be A-B-C: Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt. Now, the alphabetical order is rearranged and it's sort of like C-N-L (Colt, Noveske, LMT).....and a few more, and a few more....there's some very high quality ARs out there now. Lots of choice.

Literally or Figuratively?

H&K's MR223 are about $4500 pretty much the best piston AR out there
Knight's Armament SR-15 are about $3000 pretty much the best DI AR
Lewis Machine Tool are a pretty much competitive with KAC depending on model $1500-$2700
Colt the best "M4" ~$3200

If you are going between STAG, RRA those are about the entry-mid one...
In Canada, Norinco is also a good choice. Cheap gun quality is not H&K but its functionally great.

What about DPMS, Dlask and Sti, these any good?

DPMS and RRA would be more "Consumer" grade. At least the ones we get here are. They're ok but it wouldn't be my first choice if I needed one for anything more than the range. Dlask, there have been various reports of quality control. Some love them, some have had problems. At least that's what I've heard about them. I've never tried one personally.

X2 on Olympic arms sucking. Avoid like the plague.

Stag is a top quality rifle for the price. The ones we get here are a step above the US consumer ones. NEA is one worth looking at. They haven't been released yet but at $1000 with the options they list it will be a serious consideration. The only thing I've seen that might be a negative with them is the lower grade aluminum although it's billet not forged, and the squared off forward assist. I like the looks of the rounded forward assist. We'll see once people start getting them and messing around with them. I believe they are out tomorrow.

Noveske...but probably not under $2000

So, there are some very well priced LMT's at Questar. I would have loved to have seen those prices when I first got into the game.

If your ceiling is 2K, then your in the right price range for LMT or Colt..
Both are great rifles, and both hold their value...
The Colts are getting into the 2500 range these days, but you can still find the occasional deal.
There are other good rifles out there in that price range, but those 2 come to mind almost immediately for me...

I'm sure there are a few other good people here that will chime in with some ideas...

I have a KAC SR-15 upper right now, and I'll be getting a matching lower through OST (if OST gets them, that is). After that, I'm thinking of either a Noveske (Greentips swears by them) or an LMT. An NEA is also tempting.

I haven't owned a lot of different brands of ARs

But STI has one of the best value/money ratios for sure. Flawless function, JP trigger group, awesome comp, sweet FF handguard, all for $1500.

Norc AR's shoot very well for their cost and allow a budget minded individual to get a top notch optic and rifle for $2000, provided you aren't into just iron sights.
Skip the high end optic and also include a reloading set up in your $2000 mark.

Kick the s**t out of the rifle for a year or so then up grade. Sell it or keep it and you have a range slut for your friends.:D

I have a Norc and Armalite AR10. I'm in the process of building another AR10 and would like to add a few Armalite AR15's to my collection.

I like Armalite.

I have an Imperial Defense, runs great, awesome quality in fit and finish! I got it in 07. On the island it was the only thing they had besides r-15's. I wanted something more tactical and not an Americans hunting AR. It was 1900 then, I told him Ill pay 1600 and no taxes (shipped to the reserve) He talked to the to the manager for a bit and boom got the deal. I seen a 10 1/2 version (I have the 14 1/2) for sale at 1200 new and I think that's a very fair price.
