what are the cartridges that have been forgotten but are still worth remembering?

Probably my all time favourite varmint/small game caliber, the .22 hornet. Hardly any factory chamberings are offered anymore, factory ammo costs as much, if not more than better performing .223 ammo. It's a small rimmed cartridge, accuracy can lack, reloading can be a pain and performance is minimal. But my oh my I LOVE IT! Although it took me 5 years to find a left handed .22 hornet, I finally have it and it shoots like a dream. It has claimed many beavers and gophers in the last few years and it'll claim many more in years to come!
 
348 Winchester. Have 2 model 71’s and 2 Siamese Mauser chambered for hunting. Also shoot the 30-40 in a couple 95 Winchester’s and a Krag. Enjoy the 219 Zipper in a 99 Savage and a Savage model 219.

is any volume as good as the other? i can get one for about $30 online or $60 down the road a bit, says its in 15th edition? 2015/6 ish?

will they all have plenty of reading yeah?


will also say the 17 rem, its the tits of 17s, but down here, theres no 17 as good as a hmr LOL or so they think.
17 rem , what a weapon, fox specialty.

Mentioned it in past, I have a 348WCF in a deluxe model 71 Winchester. And, an old custom Winchester High Wall in 219 Donaldson Wasp.

Certainly lots to look at in any edition. I'm not sure what the author does from one to the next but there's a lot of difference between my 7th edition (paid $5) and 13th (also cheap when new editions came out. Has a cd rom in the back). They are both about the same size so I'm guessing that older and less popular cartridges that have been covered get dropped from the newer version to make room for newer developments.

They are appealing to the middle of the road interested shooter and reloader so the really oddball stuff isn't included. Serious cartridge collectors have more specialized books and journals. Lots for anyone to learn.
 
I am surprised nobody mentioned ( or I missed it) - .356 Winchester. I had one in a M94 AE. It was a very capable bush gun for moose and elk. Shot both with my .356 at ranges between 15 and 250 yards. Firing a 250 grain bullet faster than the 170 grain .30-30. Made the ol' 94 into a much more capable rifle. Sold mine not because it wasn't good, but it didn't have anything more to teach me.
 
10.75x68 always seemed intriguing, apparently not a favourite in Africa because of bullets designed for hunting lighter game? Seems like it would be a good “ heavy” round for Canada.

I bet the 9x57 would be an absolute ripper with modern powders and a 358 bore. Seems like it was pretty popular back in the day

8x51 Mauser was basically a 308 but I don’t think it was ever able to hit similar velocities

Am I wrong if I declare the 280 Ross an unbelted 7mm magnum case? Reminds me of the soon to be most popular cartridge in the world; the 7 PRC

I'm a fan. Still want to build one for no other reason than to say I have one, I'm pretty sure even the 416 Rem Mag is more popular than the 8mm nowadays.

I've been eyeing up a few #1s south of the border for a possible import in .405 Winchester, seems like it does quite well with the "modern rifle, modern loads" combo same as the .45/70. Tons of horsepower.

There’s one on the EE

I read a bunch of Craig Boddington articles about the 405 in the Ruger No 1. He developed No 1 only loads for heavier bullets and shot a Cape Buffalo or two with it. Cool stuff
 
22 short

No current reason for it to exist. Even the Quiet 22 long rifle is better if you don't want to annoy the neighbours.

However brings back lots of good memories growing up on the farm.
