What auto shotgun do you think is best for home defence

I have no need for a restricted shotgun, so if I was to use an auto loader I’d be stuck with an 18.5” barrel. My shotguns get used during the hunting season, even the 12.5” barreled one. To each his own though.

This thread is about home defence, not hunting. Each to his own though...

Not aimed at anyone in particular, just a general observation.

I'm getting a little tired of hearing about this mythical supposed intimidation effect that only pump guns have... Cycling the action on a semi-auto makes the exact same sound. It's the same sized bolt moving the same distance. It sounds the same. Hell, in the dark; cycling the action on anything from a Ruger Mk II up to a 1911 or desert eagle, an AR15 or a 12 ga pump action shotgun all sounds pretty much the same. Don't believe me? Try it in a dark quiet room sometime. You may be surprised.

On top of that, your average home invaders/ B&E meth heads are either going to run at the first sound of anything or stay and fight no matter what because they are there for a reason. If you're holding a gun, you had best be ready to use it and not praying for magic intimidation to do the job for you. You may end up losing your intimidating gun to a motivated bad guy and then it's lights out, my friend.

And I agree, practice, practice, practice and train, train, train. Pointing a gun at another human is serious business and if you have not properly prepared for it when it happens, things will likely not go well for you. Your wife (if she's still alive) may be using your life insurance money to move out of that old house that now holds the terrible memory of your tragic death.

I guess the bottom line is if you train and prepare, use a semi if you like semis and have trained with one. Use a pump if that's what you've planned and trained with. If you haven't trained then no amount of internet conversation will prepare you for what you may face and this whole discussion amounts to little more than academic masturbation.

just my 2 cents worth and maybe it's just that working from home for the past 4 weeks is catching up with me and I'm getting grumpy. lol

Oh, and my thoughts on the original question.

I have trained and I practice with my Bereta 1301 Tactical, kitted with a Magpul SGA stock with all spacers removed for the shortest LOP and shortest shotgun possible; and a Trijicon RMR sitting on top for great sight acquisition in all lighting conditions. It has proven itself to be reliable and I quite like it. If you are in the market for a semi but don't have the budget for a Benelli M4, the 1301 is definitely worth a look. Plus, it has fairly decent aftermarket support - mostly through Aridus industries, Nordic Components & Mesa Tactical.

Now, that said, when practicing inside my house (with snap caps of course) I do sometimes find myself wishing that I had a shorter gun. Stairwells, hallways, maneuvering around furniture in the dark, etc. are all easier with a shorter gun. A shorter gun definitely has that advantage indoors. But as has been stated here a few times; to each his own.
