Got summer work lined up on Victoria island with a maybe possibility of a muskox hunt. Looking for recommends on calibre I am thinking 6.5x55 with a 160gr bullet do I have enough gun my reasoning is it's plenty for boo and wolf just wondering. Look forward to hearing from those that have been up there. Cheers

Definately you have plenty there partner ... 1 shot from my M14 and I took my first Umingmak(Muskox) two years ago here at home. Where you going on Vic Island? Beautiful country up there ... LOTS of wildlife ... more birds then I've ever seen and I've been in every community in the territory! Have fun! Cheers,

Holman or Cam Bay side?

6.5 Swede is plenty good. No one up there uses anythign remotely "big" for hunting. Biggest rifle I've ever heard of (other than the ubiquitous SMLE "Ranger Rifle") is Otokiak's 308 (M14).

Cam bay side to start then looks like flying fish tubs for awhile hope the ice is off in two weeks. Very fortunate to be friends with the local co she has a half mount and European mount to reference from

We shot 4 this April on Victoria island. I used a .300 Win and my partner used the same .338 Win that he uses on practically everything. All muskies died in the approved fashion, and a major concern is not hitting the one behind your's.

One thing about it, if you did wound one there really isn't anywhere for it to escape too. It's not like there's any bushes to hide in.:)

That must have been one seriously harsh life, back in the day.

I'd have to agree with you on the tough part. One of our guides was 75 years old and tougher than boiled owl. The kids that were along as helpers didn't amount to any great shakes, I'd bet that neither of them had held a skinning knife before. Gotta learn sometime though.

30/06-300WSM-300 Weatherby-7EM EM-7.62(308) 375H&H- 340 Weatherby all good to go with the proper ammunition. Any 30 cal should do you ok.

Well it's decided a tikka stainless laminate in 6.5 a ruger 10 22 stainless and am working on my AT&T for my custom ruger Bisley hunter in 44 mag camp has shotguns already were building our loads now and I will haul the Beaver out of the knife to cam bay on Monday hope the ice is off the water

JHC-11 keep us informed of your trip and you will find out how to post pictures in the FAQ section. I worked in the artic for 4 years and miss the area every day.

Course most of the "Factors" that ran the Hudson Bay posts were Scottish and strike me as being pretty tough too cause they went to places like Fort Prince of Wales voluntarily

I am not Scottish nor never been to Scotland but it must be one god awful place if men freely chose Churchill as a destination rather than staying in Scotland .. and trek across muskeg with the black flies and mosquitoes to get to the Fraser Riverw:h:r
