Live in the now! Get a Short Mag..... I am totally serious.

Therein lies the scary part.....BR is serious!!!:D Buy a 308, it'll do all you need, and more. (I am a 30-06 guy, myself, but also very practical) Regards, Eagleye.

308, and a ####-load of surplus 7.62x51.

Then, practice, practice, practice....Get to know the gun....

Then zero to your hunting rounds at hunting season...

Id buy a 30-06 as it has better ballistics then a .308 (by a hair) ammo is in every town with a sporting goods section , recoil is less then a 300 mag and will kill all the critters you listed with one well placed shot. Come to think of it Im not sure why I don't own a 30-06  :)

Cheers!!

From the ones you mentioned, my suggestion is the 30-06. There's a reason it's been the most widely used cartridge for a long time. The other cartridges you mentioned are pretty good as well, but the 30-06 is the most common so therefore there is a better selection of quality used rifles out there as well as reasonably priced ammo available at Crappy Tire and Wally World. The 30-06 of today is considerably more powerful than the 30-06 of 1906. Better powders and stronger actions with better steel puts the 30-06 potential almost up there with some of the 30 cal magnums. Not quite , but close enough. If you have a rifle with a decent stock, not some narrow at the buttplate abortion, the kick won't be a problem.

:) :)

Yup a 30-06 has a lot of thump and a ton of bullet weights for anything in North America...But wait a minute so does a 300WSM and it will out perform the 30-06 in most every way.
Hold on, the .270 is an accurate flat shooter and carries its energy way out there... well the 300WSM will do all that with heavier bullet weights available to boot.
But listen up the .308 is a short action and has light recoil... whoops the 300WSM is a short action too and you guessed it, very easy on the shoulder with magnum velocity!
Only one choice here fellas...

30-06 and 270 balistics are very similar. The ammo selection is a little wider in 30-06 ... I would not consider 308 ... may fall short for long distance shots and 300wsm ammunition may be an issues when your out in the boonnies.

I personnaly own a 270 bolt and a 308 semi I just love both of them, but then again I only use them for deer, if was going for moose ... I'd pick something more powerfull like 300 ultra mag ... but if I could only buy one gun. 30-06 would be my choice.

I have owned each of the calibers you mentioned except the WSM. I used to own a 300 win mag. They are all good choices. I have hunted deer and moose with them and more. With the quality of the ammunition available today I second the thread that said accuracy is more important. Ther used to be a saying "beware the man with one gun" I suggest you go to your local gunstore and try rifles that you like. Gohang out at a range and try and shoot one of each. FWIW I now use a 7-08 for deer, black bear, moose ,elk, and hopefully next year mountain goat. Excellent results so far and never felt undergunned.
