I have a p17 action(30-06). What caliber to built?
I have à préférence for large caliber rifle.
I'm not planning to make competition
What would you do and why?

Is the action a Winchester, Remington or Eddystone?
The first two are the best actions, I wouldn't do anything with an Eddystone - actually in this day and age total conversions of military actions to nice sporting rifles is extensive and expensive and will cost considerably more than buying a nice new rifle, I wouldn't use a P17 to build on.

Has the action been altered? What and how? Pictures are good to see.

Eddystone. So i should keep it in 30-06. No possible change at all?

Eddystone's are known to be extremely hard actions, almost to the point of being brittle. If it has not been altered, it is worth more as an original to a collector.

Dave The advice offered by Guntech is quite true. Rem and Win actions are more desireable for a custom build. However many Eddystones are still good actions. The Eddystone armory used a little too much heat forging the actions and yes some were quite hard. Another problem was the military barrels were grossly over-torqued when they were installed. There were more actions damaged removing these over torqued barrels than ever failed. To remove a military barrel have the barrel end chucked in a lathe and cut a small relief grove in the barrel about 1/8 inch deep. This groove must be as close to the front of the receiver ring as possible (about .010 to .015") The barrel will now come off with no danger of damaging the receiver. The fact that your action has already been drilled and tapped indicates that your action is not glass hard and brittle. If you want a big game rifle I would suggest you install a new barrel in 35 Whelen (35 W Improved would also be very good) or a 9.3x62. You would not require any magazine, feedrail,or boltface work with either of these calibres . Put that barreled action into a decent sporter stock and you would have a decent 300 yd "thumper".

Don't you just love guys who jump in with advice without ever reading the thread.............."My opinion is so important that I don't need to read what anyone else has said".............

THE REAR ACTION SIGHT EARS HAVE ALREADY BEEN MILLED OFF AND IT HAS BEEN DRILLED AND TAPPED !!!!! It is not an original P17 anymore

id chamber it in something that will not abuse it too much maybe a .45 acp or a rifle cartridge that has low pressure(with the same base as the .30-06) .375 Whelen or something along those lines

Keep it in a .30-06 based cartridge. Save you a lot of mucking around with the bolt face, etc. Mind you, what you plan on doing with it matters somewhat. Hunting or just playing with it? You might have a problem finding a barrel that is ready to install for a P-17 too.

280.

But I'm prejudiced.

I was just given a rifle in 280 Remington built on a Brno M98 action with a new barrel, synthetic stock, Sako trigger and slick hinged floorplate. Must have cost the original owner a pretty penny to build, but my buddy bought it and passed it on when he was feeling generous. Lovely.

But if your 30-06 barrel is still good, don't mess with it. I have a BSA sported US M17 in 30-06 and except for being a bit heavy, it is a good serviceable hunting rifle as it.

Stupid question: do you need to remove the barrel if you want to "improve( ackley)" it. I'm thinking about risk of destroying the action when removing the barrel.

like someone said here its a good idea to use a lathe to put a groove in the barrel just ahead of the action to relieve the tension on the action same with most Lee Enfield's
