I have a CVA Apex that allows you to buy additional barrels. I currently have a 30 06 barrel, a CVA 50 cal muzzleloader and a Stevens 223. So looking for opinions on my next barrel. Probably going to use it for moose, deer and bear. So here are my options. 243, 270 win, 300 win mag, 308 or 07 08. What should I buy? Pbonura

ok, so the 308 is out b/c there's minimal difference between that and the 06 unless you have a reason- ie surplus ammo, or a way to get 308 at much cheaper rates- there's basically NO ballistic differece until you get above 180 grains
the 243 is just a 6mm 308, which might have a use on and up to including deer- it's a matter of personal choice
the 300 is just a 30 caliber on SPEED; it offers roughly a 50 yard increase in mpbr( maximim point blank range) over the 06/308 at a substantial increase in powder consumption
in other words , the barrel 06 that you have will do the job quite nicely
there's also a difference in HEAD size when you get into the 300 - ie the head is NOT the same as the 308/06
however it will do the same job at a more substantial cost-
have you considered a 338 win mag- there's a round with advantages over the 30 cal and you can poke alaska browns with it- why you'd want to is beyond me, but thereyou are- as far as the 7mms go, they end at 170/180 grains, which is the middle of the road for 30 cal

You don't need an extra barrel. 30-06 will do just fine. But if you really want to buy one 300 Win Mag would be my choice. If you already have the 30-06, no sense in getting a .270 or .308 or 7mm/08.

If they make it since your 06 cover almost all aspects i would go with a brush caliber like 444, 45-70, 450 Marlin or even 44 mag they are vastly superior in the thick brush 0 to 100 yards... Jp.

You've already got all you're bases covered with the 3-06 so the important question is what cartridge do you WANT to buy. Pick whatever cartridge catches your fancy, that you think might be fun to shoot or play around with different loads for.

It doesn't matter. With a .50 cal muzzleloader, a .30-06 and a .223 you are equipped at least well, in some cases very well, for practically anything. So whatever else you get is just fine-tuning and the logical outcome of that is you are eventually going to buy one of everything they make. Enjoy.
