3 questions
1) How do I identify a songbird and distinguish it from other birds?
2) Are all other birds except songbirds OK to shoot? Which ones are OK to shoot?
3) Any tips on how to track a bird? I'm a complete newb and I have a hard time tracking wounded birds.
2 questions.
1) how old are you?
2) if you're older than 13, how long ago did you come into this country?
seriously, if you can't identify an animal with a 3 second look, you shouldn't shoot it. that's the standard i was taught and teach to my friends and others i take hunting.
get your hands on a bird identification book as well as an animal identification book. before you even think of shooting anything other than cans again, spend a few months reading those books, until you can identify animals at a glance.
i dump squirrels all the time with my 495fps Gamo pellet rifle. usually one shot, occasionally a second but that's rare to need. i've even made a couple 1 shot kills on squirrels with that gun out to almost 35 yards. if i can do it with mine, you either need a way better pellet gun or some serious shooting lessons.
again, before you even consider shooting at animals, practice with your gun. practice and practice and practice some more. get until you can hit the top 1" of a 1 liter pop bottle from 15 yards 9 out of 10 times. then and only then, will you maybe be ready to shoot animals.
go take a PAL course, and your local hunting course. here in BC it's called the Conservation Outdoor Recreation Educational Course (CORE). you should also get a copy of the local hunting and shooting regulations. they'll tell you what you can and can't shoot.
to sum up.
1. learn your animals. do not even consider shooting without be able to identify with a 3 second or less glance.
2. learn to shoot. clearly, you don't know how to shoot worth jack s**t. practice until you can.
3. take a couple courses to learn what hunting and shooting is really about.
as for tracking birds, best of luck with that. no body i know tracks birds. tracking big game? you shouldn't even be thinking of big game if you can't whack a measly bird with one shot.
