What condition did YOUR Marstar M14 arrive in?

In the field cleaning kit, there are a canvas case, four piece carbon steel rod and cleaning patch holder, but doesn't include the combination tool and the chamber brush. I don't know why, is this normal? should I get them in the cleaning kit?

Email Marstar: both of mine came with the combo tool and chamber brush and a little pot of grease.

When I first stripped mine I couldn't believe they had forgotten the multi-tool and chamber brush. Then I looked a little deeper into the stock and there it was. Took a little persuasion to get it out the first time. You might want to check again.

Some new things I noticed on this one as compared to the one I got last year are the 2007 stamp on the right side of the heel, better parkerizing, better rear sight, inclusion of the manual (nice), poor indexing (oh well), and nicer packing.

Got a nice tight one though. The only thing I changed so far was to put in the SS op-rod spring guide (really all I've done to the other one too and it shoots like a dream). This one's got a nice 5-6 second ping right out of the box. Sweet.

I just got mine yesterday and am very happy with it. Nice little manual, barrel indexed right, metal butt plate is more nicely finished than other's I've seen and the stock as VERY nice compared to other's I've seen - a quick inspection showed it to be quite uniformly dense and it has a very dark chocolate color - with uniform color all over. The bad news on my order was that despite me calling them twice in the last two months to confirm my order was coming and all okay, it arrived with no scout mount as they were sold out; would have been nice to know that when I called; my last confirmation call was literally right after they packaged my order and they told me it was all good and just awaiting shipping. Besides that hiccup, I'm quite pleased.

Thank you for the info, I'll check again tonight. For the indexing, how can I know it's correct or not? do I need something to measure it?

There are ways to measure it using a couple of straight edges but I've not seen it done and don't know the details (I guess I need another Hungry session at Milcun :D) but on mine I can tell by sighting down the barrel that the tip of the sight post is canted to the left by about 2 degrees. Kind of like the minute hand on a clock at 12:58. No biggie, I'll probably scope this one or maybe find someone to turn the barrel for me a tad.

imbane, to check the indexing, hold receiver and barrel horizontal, and plumb on the receiver sides. Remove the front sight from the flashhider dovetail groove, and balance a 2-3 foot straightedge perpendicular to the bore axis. Balance another straight edge on the flat section of receiver, immediately behind the rear sight (not on the round portion of the reciever...).
Stand back and from the rear, eyeball the 2 straight edges. Indexed properly, the straight edges will line up.

See Laz'2000's FAQ http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=199665
for more detail...

How loose do the flashsuppressors get in the splines? I'm wondering if basing index off what you see of the front sight might not be misleading?

A 'loose in the spline' flash suppressor would be quite the anomaly, from what I've seen to date..... 45ACPKing or Laz'2000 would be better off to comment on that than I, rookie that I am at M14S techin'...

my answer to that is YES.... your norc flash hider could be out of spec.... I've heard of this, but i have only seen it on one rifle that by all other reference points was properly indexed... but using alignement bars showed it out of index... it was not out of index, as installing a G.I flash suppressor and using alignment bars... she looked bang on.
Laz has much more experience with these rifles and could no doubt comment further.

Barrel index perfectly straight

Light on the cosmo

No scratches

Machining inside a bit rough.

I showed up at EESA

I adjusted the rear to 100M

I loaded a 5 rounder with some Federal I bought

I put all 5 on the 8X10 plate at 100

I haven't done a THING to it. Nice!

Finally received mine!!!

 Ordered mine on Nov. 8, it shipped on Jan. 8 and the nice lady delivered it on Friday afternoon. The transfer notice from the CFC was included with the Marstar paperwork.

-overall in fairly good shape, some rough machine marks on the receiver.

-barrell indexing looks to be Ok, will check with straight edges later.

-the gas cylider is bored more or less on the center line, although the op rod meets up with the piston a little off centre, as with most of the ones reported so far.

-rear sight peep is drilled a little low, elevation works but the the windage dial is nonfunctioning, when I had them disassembled for cleaning the internals look OK but are far from being reliable.

-the wood stock fits the action nice and tight, although the finishing is a little rough. I may refinish the stock later. As the stock is still drying out the rifle is in a USGI synthetic which fits it well. As I was cycling the action listening for the ping, the connector actually came off of the spring guide. Looks like I will have to build up inside the stock to support the pin.

-op rod guide is tight, gas lock is over indexed by a few degrees but the system is tight with no rattling, I will probably shim it though.

Mine has the following issues:

- piston is not aligned with the op rod guide, way off comparing to what
I have seen before
- headspace is 1.6390", 0.001" above .308 FIELD
- piston does not move freely (needs a good cleaning so it should not be an
issue)

Barrel is indexed properly.

Sounds like a complete crap shoot..or maby just crap. I am probably too picky to get one of these, although I had strongly considered it.
I might just stick with my M1's for now. It would almost be better if they left some things for the end user to take some time to do it right.

:eek::runaway::eek:

IMO overall its still highly worth taking the plunge - and thats coming from someone who has apparently had much worse luck than most people by far. as has been said before its a decent deal even for just the forged receiver.

update on mine:

-stock is better than i expected. it is hard, i can barely make a mark with my fingernail by pressing hard, and inletting/fitting of the liner is very solid. looks quite decent. the action fits nice and tight, but i havent had a chance to fire a few hundred rounds through the gun to see how it holds up. i will definitely keep the stock, if not for range use then as a spare.

my first impression of the stock was that it was quite heavy and solid (even with the cleaning kit removed from the buttplate :) )
i decided to clean it the other day and sprayed it with a high-pressure showerhead with really hot water, then gave it a good scrub with some murphy's oil soap to get the cosmoline off.
well, now that its no longer saturated with cosmo and completely dry the stock is a lot lighter in weight, feels almost like balsa wood. id say it lost over 1/3 of its weight just after being degreased
there are some cracks on it that are visible now that werent when they were filled/glued with hardened cosmoline. i will still sand it smooth (its a bit rough) and refinish it with some tung oil, but i take back what i said earlier about regretting that i purchased the USGI fibreglass stock. im very relieved that i got one back in November.

in fact id recommend anyone interested in these rifles keep an eye on the EE for a good deal on a USGI fibreglass stock or some sortof stock upgrade.

just a little note from my order, the gas cylinder shims kit from marstar is too small I had to file it a bit with a dremel, I needed 3 of them to have solid lock.
