What condition did YOUR Marstar M14 arrive in?

Mine arrived today- quite pleased with it. Barrel is visibly canted to the left a few degrees. Gas spigot appears centered, rear sight is servicable although feels gritty and the peep is drilled low. Front sight is drifted all the way to the right for some reason. Will take it out this weekend if it's not to cold out.

I had two arrive Monday...one is about average. The op rod guide is a little loose (five minute fix) and the barrel is a LITTLE overtightened (five minute fix.) Sights are of course a little gritty (swapped them out anyway) and naturally it's soaked in cosmoline - no problem as we all expect that.

Gun two, different story. Frankly it is the best Nork 14 I have ever handled. The op rod guide is tight and the barrel is within a degree of straight, if not dead on. The gun RINNGGGGSSSSS forever. The trigger is five pounds, tops, zero creep and breaks like frozen glass.

I love norks anyway, but this second one is just beyond belief. I can't wait to shoot it, I think it will be deadly!

Thanks John! Super happy with the guns (and accessories tucked in box 1!)

Further interesting info - the stock on the second rifle is made of different wood than usual. Hard and much denser than the chu wood you usually see. I have sanded it and begun oiling it...almost looks like some kind of rosewood? Very very nice!

ya, one of mine came with a real nice stock as well, WAY harder grained than any norc stock i've seen yet, nice reddish dark brown wood. I have it listed in the ee if anyone needs to replace thier softie :D

well i got mine yesterday .. w/ the usual indexing issues...i disassembled it for the degreasing and looks like i used the wrong cleaning product on the stock..in under 10 minutes all the finish was gone. it looked fine when i finished.. went back to look after a half hour and the wood has turned like a driftwood color. looks like a new staining is on the horizon.

Got two today. Both look good. No obvious issues with barrel or sights. Decent looking wood. I'll tear them down this weekend and degrease them, & look at the finer points. Its hard to tell much when they have that much waxy grease in the operating mechanism. One seems to cycle a little smoother, but until they are cleaned up its meaningless. The adjustable sights operate properly and the peep is drilled as close to center as you could spot. Safety and trigger / disconnect are both good and operate as they should.

I had to remove a bit of material (wood/stain) from behind the trigger guard before I could open it. Still have a smalll blood blister from the pressure on my fingertip when pulling back and up.

I stick the round shaft of a robertson screwdriver through the hole in the trigger guard to give me some more leverage to unlatch it. I'd rather it be tight.

The hole in the trigger guard was intended for this purpose.

Other methods include using a strap to give one something more to hold onto and instead of trying to pinch with the index and thumb of one hand(while pulling back with the stock pressed to one's hip), one can lay the rifle upside down on the workbench, use two thumbs to push the guard to the rear while other fingers hug stock neck and heel of the receiver.

LOL wish I knew those hints sooner. No harm done, it's still tighter than anything, at least now I won't put myself through hell next time, fingers hurt for days...

The hole in the trigger guard was designed so you could use the nose of a bullet (live round) to help get the trigger group out, but I've found that a tight one will usually bend the round a bit.

To remove the trigger guard, use a small punch in the hole provided in the back of the guard, same as on a Mini-14 which was copied from this design. It gives you the little bit extra leverage to pull the guard out of engagement.

Whoops, looks like this got covered since I last updated the thread on my PC ... Double tap.

norc arrival condition

When I heard of no more coming in I got a spare. It was typical - front sight all the way to the right but the op rod guide was tight and op rod guide was centered. The wood was hard and well finished - (surprise surprise). The action was in the stock to tight - no flex at the ferrule lip.The rear sight clicked well. I put it in one of my shimmed G.I. fiberglass stocks and got about 5 lbs flex - greased the ferrule lip and off to the range. Was sighted perfectly for 200 yrds ! All rounds in the black at 100 with the irons. BUT - If I pull the op rod away from the receiver while pulling back it easily comes off the track. On my old norc it was much tighter. All in all -I am very pleased with the quality and shootability. Miss the bayo lug tho. :dancingbanana:

I notice on disassembly of the rear sights, that the serrations for the elevation dial that are part of the receiver are poorly made. They are quite deep for half of the circle, and slowly fade off into near nothing on the opposite side. Having installed Garand rear sights, its quite noticeable that the clicks are deep and distinct through part of the range, but quite shallow on the rest. I'd like to buy one of those replacement shims that you glue down to restore the serrations.

I also notice the handguard is tight to the wood on the left side of the receiver, so much so that it gets compressed when locking down the trigger group. I remedied this by removing the handguard, then removing the handguard clip, and filing down the notches on the right side of the handguard, so that once re-installed, the handguard can rotate under the clip to the right.

The easiest way to remove the handguard is to back off the gas lock ring and pull the gas piston forward. Now you can slide the handguard off the front. Lockring pliers for an internal C clip work well for removing the handguard clip, if you find the need to as I did.
