God I had hair back then. LOL

1968 Model 99e .300 savage 180gr federal soft point factory loads with an old Bushnell Command Post 2.5 fixed scope on it.

I heard something running in the bush when I turned around to look there was a small buck, I shouldered the gun and tried to pull the trigger but the saftey was on, (nervous). I then heard something else running behind the small buck, It was a hound from the hunt camp next property over . I looked back over at the buck who had stopped to look back at the dog and I smoked him at 40 yards through the lungs. He went down like a bag of hammers and struggled to get up but couldn't. I ran over and I could see the cold air blowing out his wound so I shouldered the gun looked through the scope and tried to shoot him in the head. well being very inexperienced and young I did'nt notice the rock under his head and I also didn't realize that I was too close to be using the scope. The bullet missed his head and exploded the rock just inches from his head thank god it didn't send any lead or rock back at me. The buck died probably 25 seconds after I first pulled the trigger but it seemed to be an eternity. I said my thanks to god. I then gutted that deer and when my dad and the others came I was smiling ear to ear covered head to toe with blood and guts. I smiled all the way back to the road allowance while they were dragging it through the prickly ashe. The buck was a small 5 pointer.

I betcha my dad must have been so proud of me and what a site I must have been!

I still use the 99e religiosly for my deer rifle and have since put a Bushnell elite 3200 on it and now I reload 150gr Nosler partitions in front of 41grs of IMR 4895.

Shot my first bear, mulie, w/t all with the same rifle. A-Bolt .300 mag.
I carried a .303 and a .44 both open sighted for 2 seasons before deciding I needed more distance, turns out I could have nailed my firsts of all three species with either of my open sighted rifles as they were all shot under 90 yds or so. Go figure.

First deer was with a 30-06 FN actioned Husqvarna. 300 yards running, very lucky shot. Hooked me for life though.
Since then, more with 30-06, couple with 308, couple with 300 Win Mag, several dozen with 270, last year one with a 280 remington. This year, hopefully one with a 7x57 and another with a 257 Roberts.

Sako 7mm Remington Mag, Hornady 154 grain Interbond (Factory loaded); 25 yards tops.

I was out early one morning, walking down an old wood lot access road and it stepped out into a clearing right in front of me. Bang-flop. That was years ago, haven't shot one since, and never did get to try any of the meat; gave it all away to some elders.

7-57m/m mauser

I shot my first deer at the age of 17 with a full length stocked sport mauser, bolt action. The 7m/m had a 180 grain round nose bullet. The young eight pointer was 75 yards away and it was a cold morning, bright sunshine and snow on the ground. The buck came within 10 yards of me but I had to wait to get my rifle in possition. I can still see him in my peep sight. It seems like yesterday but from my aching bones I know it was in Nov. 1968.
