I have to confess, part of the fun of owning a Tavor is explaining to American friends that I have a 5.56 black rifle that they don't. Its one of the few points where we come out ahead. I know that we get the true german HK MR223 and MR308s, but when I'm thinking about non-restricted bolt guns it just isn't my field of expertise.

I'm definitely more than ready to start doing precision stuff, and am constantly hunting the EE for a .308 precision rifle. But I would be even happier if I could find a rig that falls into the same kind of deal that the Tavor does. Unavailable in America because of its country of manufacture.

What distance rifles do we get that the US does not?

Just a thought: do the unique alpine rifles from CSC show up down south? Those things are so bloody expensive that I don't think they really show up anywhere.

How do the American's get Sako rifles if they're supposedly manufactured in Finland?

We get Norinco Clones
1911
Sig
CZ
M14
m4

At a fraction of the cost that they get there name brand equipment

USA get get dirt cheep primers / powder
$107-125 per 5000 primers as well as other stuff

We get a wider seletion of Sako and Tikka rifles up here. Anything that's available in Europe plus Special Orders,Stoeger can order. Beretta USA will only bring in certain models and will not do orders for other models or calibres.

--US Lend-Lease stuff cannot return to the US. Thats what happened to many Garands that came from Denmark a while back.

--Anything over 50 cal is considered a Destructive Device in the US, and cannot be imported. We got Russian PTRD antitank rifles from Albania a few years ago.

-Russian made military rifles are difficult to import to US, so we get them instead. Cheap SKS-45 and SVT-40 rifles!

--Norinco stuff, as noted above.

We can have short barrels on rimfires, shotguns and non-semiauto CF rifles without paying a $200 tax stamp to have it.

You get to have SBR's, and don't need "bullet buttons" on your ARs (California).
We get to have short barreled pistols, high cap mags, and don't need permission to transport - yet.
The US. has laws that limit the importing of foreign semi-autos based on criteria like - sporting vs non-sporting, and laws that mandate a certain number of US made parts be included in order to be compliant.
I don't know the extent to which it limits the number of brands available etc. but I have noticed a lot of brand names that get thrown around on this site are unfamiliar to me.
On a side note, back in the 70's my Dad taught me to shoot on an old surplus sporterized Lee-enfield .303. My understanding is, you can get them up there for a song. I've been searching high and low down here, but I haven't seen one any cheaper than about $400. And I've noticed that the caliber isn't readily available around here either.

See maybe that's what I'm looking for. I took advantage of the norinco thing early on, but they're stuff doesn't appeal to me any more.

Maybe some of the stuff tactical imports brings in are not so USA?

Since this is a precision rifle forum, I don't consider anything Norinco in the precision category. So I don't think any precision rifle shooters in the US are getting any grey hair over that.

GM6; Type 88 Sniper, most foreign made 50 cal. We can also own true G36, MP7 and UMP's; albeit at high prices and very hard to find.

The Tavor is coming to the US in the future; new annoucement at SHOT 2012.

Short barreled non-semi shotguns are considered non-restricted here; these are controlled in the US.

There will be more black rifles we can own that they can't in the future as they approved for import.

True precision rifles not allowed to be permanently imported to the USA, that I know of as we have had inquiries from US customers, hence checking with BATFE for a determination.
DSR1 or DSR50
AMSD Nemesis
ATRS AT15 rifles
