What do you feed you Norc M14?

Just curious to see what people are feeding their M14s. I have used the SA surplus, although I found it shoots like junk and for some strange reason doesn't cycle the action correctly all the time. When I was firing this 147 grn ammo, the bolt wasn't being blown back far enough to strip a new round off of the magazine and into the chamber. On the other hand, the Remington Express 180 grn .308 win I shoot cycles the action flawlessly and is FAR more accurate. Next time I hit the range I will pick up some 150 grn Express and see if there is any difference in accuracy and how the rifle cycles. I know it's not a problem with the firearm because I have a couple of them and they both experienced the same problem with the SA stuff.

Anyway, let me know what you guys are shooting and how your ammo performs.

I've shot nato marked IVI 77 fmj and it performs flawlessly, aside from the odd one that stovepipes under the scope mount. No problems with it in my rifle that is iron sights. Federal premium hunting ammo seems to perform flawlessly, but I can't say I've gone through enough boxes to say its any better than the IVI military surplus. It is for accuracy though. I have some Czech VZ marked ammo that has very rough case finish, and I've had a few failure to close the bolt. I wonder if friction in stripping off a round plays any role on these cases that are very rough? They are not nato, so they may also have different gas characteristics.

At this piont, I'll feed mine whatever I can get! Can't wait till a big shipment of surplus comes in....(dare to dream!!) I've put all kinds of different surplus (IVI, Austrian, Portugese, & Chez) through my M14s.....no problems with the SA surplus.....of course no problems with "factory" type hard point (ie; Winchester/Remington ect).....in fact, no problems that I can recall with any ammo...even crap corrosive stuff...my M14s just seem to eat it all up. I do keep my rifles very clean...I'm sure that helps a bit.

I only like ammo that is accurate and feeds right. That's why I roll my own. I've done SA, IVIs, LC M118s, Bulgarians, plus the FMJs of Fed, Rem, and Win on mine. Not a single problem.

I found a can of surplus .308 in the 20 rd light blue boxes. It's been in my shop for about 10 years. Anyone know what it is and if it's any good? Non corrosive?

I just picked up two cases of SA 7.62 surplus. It's packed into the 140 round "battle packs". The feedback that the seller's been getting has been very positive in terms of accuracy. I was just happy to get my hands on the stuff for 55 cents a round.

From what I've been told you shouldn't REGULARLY use anything over 168 grain as it puts too much pressure on the system and can result in a bent oprod or other nasty surprises, once in a blue moon should be OK, but don't make a habit of it...

...of course this IS second hand info, but I've heard it from enough reliable sources that I follow it.

I use military surplus casings, Winchester WLR Primers, and either H-4895 or IMR 4064 Powder. I don't have the info handy on the actual loads, but I can look later for you if you want. I bought a ####load of Surplus 150gr FMJ bullets from the local gun shop, but when I ran out of that, I used Hornady's bulk 150gr FMJ-BT Bullets. All my loads have been flawless, but I don't use it much past 150m.

Works in mine.

it's not second hand info- its a KNOWN FACT- the odd box yes, but your heaviest should be 168 grain unless you have access to an armourer and can effect a complete rebuild, in which case you can use the 175 smks-for those of us with less noble assets, 165s for hunting and 168s for target

Has anyone actually personally experienced mechanical breakdowns with higher grn ammo? I've only fired about 20 rounds of the stuff, but it would be good to know.

Also, for those guys who reload, how much are you guys spending per round? I've been told that reloading rifle ammo is almost as expensive as buying the stuff at the store.

running sa surp right now...great imho. not sniper grade but I am not asking that of it either. @ 100m it is very good with irons.

Filip,

I calculated my handloads of 150 gr Hornady FMJ-BT, H4895, CCI-200 Primer, and IVI brass to around .38¢ per round. This stuff is accurate at 500 meters. I broke 500 using this stuff at last years Service Condition Match organized by the OSA at Connaught. The accuracy pay off is well worth it compared to surplus ammo. If you can't hit it well, why waste your ammo?

If you want a cheaper plinking ammo, try rolling a 110gr FMJ plated bullets from Frontier, normally used for a 30 carbine, at 64$ for 1000. My cost calculation brought it down to .24¢ a round. It's low recoil and accurate to 200 meters.

BTW I use a IER Burris 2.75X Scope on my Norc. It will do it's job well even at 500m. No super power scope here.
