What do you guys recommend in a semi 30-06 under 1000 bucks

Remington 7400 or an M-1 Garand if you can find one.
The Rem. is probably more practical for hunting(ease of scope mounting)

Get a BAR. I've had 2 Reminton autoloaders. Nice to handle but jam too many times. The Remington pump is a better way to go. The Benelli R1 or the Merkel autoloaders are far superior but cost 1500 to 1900.

thanks for the advice guys. A garand was an interesting one. How difficult is scoping one?

It uses a side mount that offsets the scope to the side to clear the loading (and clip unloading) path down into the receiver. You need to buy 5 round en bloc clips to be hunting legal in many provinces. You would also need to buy a Schuster or McCann gas plug to lower pressures in the gas system with commercial ammo. And the final reason not to do it is that scoping one will destroy its value as a classic milsurp. Is it a great rifle? Absolutely. It is hands down my favorite rifle in the safe. Is it a good hunting rifle? Not really. A BAR will be much better for what you are looking for.

I plan to hunt with my Garand this fall, but using the aperture sights during the daylight hours. I have National Match sights on it and they are more than adequate for shots out to 200yds or so. I will also have a scoped bolt action for use during the early and late hours when the light is poor.

BAR or Benelli

Both good, BAR is more accurate. If you want to save money find a Winchester sxr, same as the BAR, different look.

Also long and shrot trac mags can be made detachable using the sxr parts. I'm trying to find the part number for the pieces you need to swap out and I'll post it when I find them. For the old style BAR's, go with the safari, it hold one more in the mag.

Another alternative is a used Winchester 100, but it only came in 308. It is a light, handy rifle. The Benelli is going to almost double your budget.

As for the difference between 30-06 and 308, unless you are handloading bullets over 180gr, your intended target will never know the difference.

The Winchester SXR Semi is sometimes cheaper than the Browning Bar, and is the exact same thing. Maybe the wood is nicer on the Bars though. If I was looking at the Bars I would definetely check out the SXR. Lebaron's in Toronto had some of the SXR for I think around $900, which is usually a couple hundred less than the BAR. Not sure if they still have them though.

I am looking at getting a M14, that is .308 though, not 30-06. I use my ATV to hunt moose though, so carrying the extra pounds won't be such a chore for me when its in a Gun Boot.

Check out the Winchester SXR and compare it to the Browning Bar, though if you plan on doing some hiking, because they are nice and light compared to a M14.

Not sure if there still in stock. Call them to find out. Shipping to the Soo should'nt be to much $$

The BAR is an excellent rifle I have the Safari in 308 it looks and feels great its rock solid dependable and with reloads I am getting 1 1/4" accuracy at 100 yds and am working towards 1" MOA.

SXR's should be 700-800.

Sorry about the 1000 dollar limit and the benelli comment, I have seen two used ones for 800 though.

SAside from the fact that you'll ruin the garand, the enbloc clips are a pain for hunting purposes, especially if in and out of a truck, and that the gun is bulky and heavy, you have to use the right, lower pressure ammo with it to avoid bending the oprod or other failures. 150gr is the stated max bullet weight for commercial ammo but it really depends on the powder burn rate and the bullet... Short story is leave the garands alone, they are not suited to your purpose.
