What do you guys recommend in a semi 30-06 under 1000 bucks

Get a BAR. I've had 2 Reminton autoloaders. Nice to handle but jam too many times. The Remington pump is a better way to go. The Benelli R1 or the Merkel autoloaders are far superior but cost 1500 to 1900.

right on, I had a Remy in 06, jam-o-matic have one in 08 much better.

never used Binelli but have used BAR, very good
but I have an a pump action in my future

I've known, and owned a few jam-o-matic Remingtons. Maybe they've fixed it, but once stung...
If I were looking for a semi, I'd look long and hard at the Browning. Guys at camp that have them have had no issues.

If it must be light, I'd go for the used Winchester 100 in 308.
There was a recall on these a long time ago, and parts can be hard to come by, but they are outstanding rifles.
Just check to see the recall fix has been done.

Where is Bigredd when you need him anyway?

Browning BAR - forget the short trac and long trac. Go with the older BAR!

Have to agree with this comment. The BAR was "upgraded" to save costs and to change the appearance to make them look more modern. Bad move, the older ones that I had the pleasure of using were accurate and reliable, bit heavy(mine was a .338WM :D), but it is an auto.

Do you have any facts to support this comment or is it just a personal thing concerning the appearance?

I certainly have had no issues with the 3 Shorttrac's I have had that have moved onto other members of my family and they where all quite accurate. My father has one of the old BAR's in 300 Win Mag and never touches it now that I got him a Shorttrac in 300WSM. We have put well over 100 rounds through it and never had a failure, and the Short Trac weighs substantially less making it a pleasure to carry.

Other than personal taste in appearance I can't see why anyone would chose a old style BAR over the new Short and Long Trac's.

I am pretty sure there will be a new 270 Longtrac in my gun cabinet before hunting season this year!

I've handled the Winchester SXR semi auto just recently and I was really impressed. Very similar to the BAR, but a good $200 cheaper.

The BAR and the Binelli R1 are also basically a sure thing as a good rifle.

Remington semi's are mixed in terms of reliability.

I would pick the Bar with boss. My friend has 2 and they shoot great. I wish I could post a pick of the groups he shoots.

The Norinco M-14s are great if you like hauling around a 10lb battle rifle that really doesn't work all that well with a scope.

A sporting rifle is a much better choice for the well adjusted hunter/shooter with nothing to prove. :nest:

I have 2 Remmy 750's in 243 and 308 (wood) and have been great, no problems at all and are very accurate. Can't see paying so much more for a Benneli. They are not a heavy gun by any means.
